SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – All it took was one big inning for the McDowell Trojans in Wednesday’s Class 6A subregional game against Mifflin County.
Trailing 3-0, the Trojans scored five runs in the fourth inning and made that hold in a 5-3 win, advancing to play WPIAL runner-up Hempfield in the first round of the PIAA playoffs on Monday.
Having already plated three runs, Spence Dietz had what turned out to be the game-winning hit, a bloop single with two outs to score a pair and make it 5-3.
Dietz came on in relief of Dan Snyder in the sixth to get the 2-inning save, retiring all six batters he faced. Snyder allowed three runs (one earned) in his five innings.
More on the Trojans’ subregional win to follow.
