No. 13 – Cathedral Prep, North East Win State Golf Titles; Pickers’ Swan Wins Individual Gold

They say hitting a golf ball straight is an art form.

In Erie County that art form has been perfected.

A pair of team golf titles and an individual crown are proof of that.

The individual title belongs to Isaiah Swan of North East, who did so in dramatic fashion.

In a sudden-death playoff with Scranton Prep’s Matthew Tressler, Swan sunk a long birdie putt on the hole to claim the Class 2A state crown at Heritage Hills in York.

Swan and Tressler both carded 69s to get the playoff, which put them five shots clear of a 5-way tie for third-place at 74. A big reason why Swan got to the playoff was a sizzling 33 on the front nine.

It has become a household affair for the Swan family, as Isaiah’s sister, Lydia, finished third in the Class 2A girls’ competition, a year after winning a state title.

Lydia was a big reason why North East’s girls were one of two state championship teams to come out of Erie County with Cathedral Prep being the other one.

Cathedral Prep won the Class 3A title topping Unionville and Liberty by five strokes each behind the play of Zach Henry (one under par) and Breckin Taylor (even par).

North East topped second-place Greensburg Central Catholic by six shots led by Lydia Swan’s 3-under par performance that included a true signature moment, a hole-in-one, on the par 3 eighth hole. Anna Swan was +4 for her round, including an even-par 36 on the back nine and a birdie on No. 18.
