Grove City Rallies for OT Victory; Karns City Scores Big Win Over Aquinas Academy; North East Powers Past Ike

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Trailing by as many as 11 in the third quarter, Grove City rallied to stay perfect in Region 4 play with a 56-52 overtime win against Sharpsville.

Grove City (15-4 overall, 9-0 Region 4) trailed 41-32 going to the fourth quarter, but went on a 14-5 run in the fourth to force overtime.

Piper Como knocked down a big 3-pointer in the fourth quarter for the Eagles to help force the extra session.

Maddie Osborn was 8-of-8 from the free throw line for Grove City and knocked down some big ones to help put the game way in overtime.

                                      

Como finished with a game-high 20 points, while Osborn had 18, Lola Kolbe eight and Izzie Gamble six.

Macie Steiner scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half and overtime for Sharpsville (7-10, 4-5), while Lily Palko scored 12 of her 15 points in the first half.

Brooklyn Ramsey also added eight points for Sharpsville.

NORTH EAST 43, EISENHOWER 31

RUSSELL, Pa. – An 8-0 third-quarter run put the game out of reach as North East picked up a 43-31 Region 3 road win over Eisenhower.

Eisenhower (7-9 overall, 3-7 Region 3) hit a bucket to trim the lead to 21-16 with just over five minutes to play in the third. North East (12-6, 7-3) answered by scoring eight straight to go up 29-16.

“We had some 3-on-2 options in the first half we didn’t go through with in the first half,” North East’s Gigi Gaston said in her Cole Orthodontic Associates player interview. “In the second half we made the better pass and got the layup.”

The first half Thursday looked nothing like the game these two teams played back on Jan. 4. In that contest, three players had 20 or more points and the teams combined for nearly as many points in the first half (71) as they had all game on Thursday.

“I feel like last time we let them shoot a little more, and we defintely played a lot better defense today,” Gaston said. “And that helped us win the game.”

The game was tied, 9-9, at the end of the first quarter, but the Pickers’ defense held the Knights to just three points in the second quarter as North East took an 18-12 lead into the half. North East found some offensive rhythm in the second half, as the Pickers knocked down four 3-pointers.

Kayla Forsythe had a team-high 11 points in the win. Gaston, Alaina Rodemoyer, and Sam Probst each had eight points, while Maisy Post chipped in seven points.

                                   

Clara Steinberg had a game-high 17 points for the Knights. Lainey Font and Laney Belcher each had six points.

KARNS CITY 42, AQUINAS ACADEMY 37

GIBSONIA, Pa. – The best varsity game of Savanna Prescott’s life lifted Karns City to a 42-37 road upset win over Aquinas Academy of the WPIAL.

Prescott, who had scored in double digits just twice in her career including tying her previous career high with 11 points Tuesday at Clarion-Limestone, exploded for 17 points in the victory against the Crusaders (15-4), who were ranked third in Class 1A in the WPIAL by the Tribune Review.

Behind 10 points from Prescott, shorthanded Karns City (13-5), playing without its top two scorers in Chloe Fritch (out for the season) and Brooklynn Taylor, led 24-22 at halftime before pushing the lead to five, 31-26, going to the fourth quarter.

Prescott added six more tallies in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory.

Hanna Dailey and Phoebe Brandon each added nine tallies in the victory.

Emily Fisher and Ellie Junker each scored nine points for Aquinas Academy.

MAPLEWOOD 55, UNION CITY 48

GUYS MILLS, Pa. – Savannah O’Hara pumped in 26 points as Maplewood inched closer to a Region 2 title with a 55-48 win over Union City.

Maplewood (16-3 overall, 9-0 Region 2) trailed 39-37 going into the fourth quarter, outscoring Union City (8-10, 5-3) 18-9 in the fourth quarter.

O’Hara scored 14 points in the second half, while Maggie Means scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half for Maplewood.

Brooke VanTassel had 13 points and Cathryn Reynolds 12 for UC.

WILMINGTON 54, HICKORY 20

HERMITAGE, Pa. – Lia Krarup scored 18 points to power Wilmington to a 54-20 Region 4 road win over Hickory.

                                  

Wilmington (15-4 overall, 8-1 Region 4) jumped out to a 20-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

Krarup scored 13 of her 18 points in the first, while Alyssa Flick added eight points for the Greyhounds and Sarah Dieters seven.

Giana Fleming had five points for Hickory (5-14, 4-6).

SLIPPERY ROCK 32, GREENVILLE 24

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock outscored Greenville 10-5 in the fourth quarter en route to a 32-24 Region 4 win.

Belle Miller and Madison Romanovich nailed two buckets each for the Rockets (6-11 overall, 3-5 Region 4) to help put the game away.

Romanovich and CJ Sabo had nine points each, while Miller tallied eight.

Lexi Busch had nine points and Preslie Kirila six for Greenville (7-12, 0-9).

COCHRANTON 46, SAEGERTOWN 41

SAEGERTOWN, Pa. – Eve Pfeiffer scored 19 points to lead Cochranton to a 46-41 Region 2 win over Saegertown.

The Cardinals (10-9 overall, 7-2 Region 2) overall, who led 23-19 at halftime and 34-27 after the third quarter.

Claire McCartney went 7-of-8 from the charity stripe and finished with nine points for Cochranton, while Marley Rodax also had nine points.

Lindsey Greco had 11 points and Lyndzee Amory 10 for Saegertown (9-10, 5-4).

WARREN 39, FRANKLIN 27

FRANKLIN, Pa. – Sammie Ruhlman scored 20 points to lead Warren to a 39-27 Region 5 win over Franklin.

The Dragons (13-4 overall, 6-0 Region 5) went on an 11-2 run in the second quarter to take a 26-12 halftime lead.

Ruhlman scored 14 of her points in the first half, including a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter

Alyssa Farr and Alana Stuart scored five points each for Warren.

Katie Boal had 16 points for Franklin (11-7, 3-3), while Kiersten Hicks added seven.

NORTHWESTERN 64, TITUSVILLE 26

TITUSVILLE, Pa. – Makayla Presser-Palmer scored 29 points as Northwestern picked up 64-26 Region 3 road win over Titusville.

Presser-Palmer scored 13 points in the first quarter as Northwestern (15-3 overall, 9-1 Region 3) jumped out to a 33-8 lead.

Chloe Yazembiak scored 13 points for the Wildcats and Lana Keth eight.

Ava Matteson had eight points for Titusville (2-15, 2-8).

FAIRVIEW 45, GENERAL MCLANE 21

FAIRVIEW, Pa. – Bre Heidt scored 19 points as Fairview powered past General McLane in Region 6 action, 45-21.

Fairview (14-5 overall, 6-3 Region 6) jumped out to a 14-2 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

Heidt scored 11 points in the first half and Ella Garrity also had 11 points for the Tigers.

Bella Dibble led GM (8-11, 3-6) with seven points.

MCDOWELL 60, HARBOR CREEK 50

ERIE, Pa. – Mikaela Bennett led three McDowell players in double figures with 14 points in a 60-50 win over Harbor Creek.

McDowell (3-13, 3-5) trailed 46-45 going to the fourth quarter, outscoring the Huskies (10-7, 4-5) 15-4 in the fourth quarter.

Amaiya Nelson had seven of her 10 points in the fourth quarter for the Trojans, while Francesca Russo knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points, all in the first half.

Brooke Przybylski had 19 points for Harbor Creek, while Elise Benim added 16.

CONNEAUT 53, MEADVILLE 14

LINESVILLE, Pa. – Lainie Harrington had 25 points as Conneaut beat Meadville, 53-14 in Region 5 play.

Harrington also had four assists and three steals for CASH (12-5, 5-1), while Haylee Morini had five rebounds and Kaitlyn Crabb had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Jayda Gongaware had seven points for Meadville (0-16, 0-6).

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS 59, ROCKY GROVE 18

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS, Pa; – Payton Leandro and Sydney Zilhaver combined for 38 points in Cambridge Springs’ 59-18 Region 2 win over Rocky Grove.

Leandro scored 20 points (18 in the first half) and Zilhaver 18 (12 in the first half) for the Blue Devils (7-11 overall, 3-5 Region 2).

Emily Rice had eight points for Rocky Grove (6-11, 0-9).

KANE 47, CLARION 35

CLARION, Pa. – Outscoring Clarion by 13 points in the second half, visiting Kane topped the Lady Cats, 47-35.

Clarion (11-7) led 15-14 at the break but an 18-point third quarter by Kane (9-8) helped the Lady Wolves take a 32-27 lead going to the fourth quarter.

Leah Tigani hit a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter and Maya Smith hit a three while scoring seven points in the frame.

Tigani, who hit four triples in the contest, then hit another 3-pointer in the fourth quarter and Smith went 4 of 4 from the line to help Kane pull away.

Smith (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Isabella Saf (12 points, 12 rebounds) each had double-doubles for the Lady Wolves with Tigani adding 13 points.

Taylor Alston led Clarion with 13 points with Alivia Diehl adding seven.

CORRY 47, OIL CITY 28

OIL CITY, Pa. – Leading 21-20 at halftime, visiting Corry went on a 13-0 run in the third quarter to pull away for a 47-28 Region 5 win over Oil City.

Haley Mumau had 17 points for Corry (8-9 overall, 3-3 Region 5), while Grace Allen had 13 and Kaygen Rogers 10.

Payton Liederbach had 16 points for Oil City (8-10, 1-5).

LAKEVIEW 47, REYNOLDS 4

STONEBORO, Pa. – Emma Marsteller had 13 points and six rebounds as Lakeview beat Reynolds, 47-4.

Kynrdra Seddon 11 points, three rebounds and three steals for the Sailors (10-8 overall, 8-2 Region 1).

Ava Murcko had all four points for Reynolds (4-14, 3-7).

WEST MIDDLESEX 64, FARRELL 36

FARRELL, Pa. – Caitlin Stephens scored 24 points to lead West Middlesex to a 64-36 Region 1 win.

Sloan Mild added 14 points for the Big Reds (15-3 overall, 8-2 Region 1),who led 31-20 at halftime.

Emma Mild was also in double figures with 11 points.

Janiya Daniels had 16 points and Damerra Thomas 10 for Farrell (5-10, 3-6).

MERCER 48, COMMODORE PERRY 14

HADLEY, Pa. – Zoey Seidel scored 14 points to lead Mercer to a 48-14 win over Commodore Perry.

Mercer (11-6 overall, 6-4 Region 1) went on an 18-2 run in the second quarter to take a 22-4 halftime lead.

Anna Allen added nine points for Mercer

Marley Meyer and Jazlyn Boyles had four points each for CP (0-17, 0-10).

SHARON 52, PORTERSVILLE CHRISTIAN 48

SHARON, Pa. – Tay Chester had 16 points to help Sharon to a 52-48 win over Portersville Christian.

Niyonna Amos had 12 points for Sharon and India McGee 10.

WEST BRANCH 49, CURWENSVILLE 18

CURWENSVILLE, Pa. – Jenna Mertz scored 17 points to lift visiting West Branch to a 49-18 ICC North win over Curwensville.

Sarah Buglielmi added nine points for the Warriors (11-8 overall, 5-3 ICC North).

Natalie Wischuck scored seven points for Curwensville (0-17, 0-8).
