ECC, St. Marys Girls Advance to AML Finals; Redbank, Moniteau to Meet in KSAC Title Game

ST. MARYS, Pa. – A strong start helped Elk County Catholic to a 45-23 win over DuBois Central Catholic in the AML Semifinals at Aaron Straub Gym at ECC.

The Lady Crusaders led 17-9 at the end of the first quarter and then outscored DCC 14-4 in the second quarter to take a 31-13 halftime lead.

Tori Newton scored six points in the first quarter, while Lucy Klawuhn netted 10 first-half tallies – five in each of the first two quarters – for ECC.

Klawuhn and Emily Mourer, who escorted seven second-quarter points, led the Lady Crusaders with 13 points each with Newton adding eight and Sami Straub six.

                                      

Kayley Risser paced DCC with six points.

ECC will face St. Marys in the championship game at 6 p.m. Saturday at St. Marys High School.

ST. MARYS 49, KANE 28

ST. MARYS, Pa – Playing in its first-ever AML semifinal game in its first year in the league, St. Marys defended its home court with a 49-28 win over Kane.

Up nine at the half, 23-14, after a 17-point first quarter, the Lady Dutch took any drama out of the contest by outscoring Kane 16-9 in the third quarter.

                          

Izzy Catalone scored seven of her 13 points in the third quarter with Maura Caskey adding five of her 12 in the quarter.

Jayssa Snelick also scored 12 points for St. Marys, including six in the opening eight minutes,

Maya Smith had 11 for Kane.

St. Marys will face crosstown rival Elk County Catholic at 6 p.m. at St. Marys High School in the title game Saturday.

MONITEAU 45, NORTH CLARION 37

CLARION, Pa. – Moniteau overcame a 3-point third-quarter deficit to top North Clarion, 45-37, in the KSAC semifinals at PennWest Clarion’s Tippin Gym.

The teams were tied at 18 at halftime, and North Clarion took a 24-21 lead in the third quarter before Moniteau went on a 12-4 quarter-ending run that was capped by a 3-pointer by Abbey Jewart with just under four seconds left in the quarter.

That run gave the Lady Warriors a 33-28 lead going into the fourth quarter.

North Clarion got back within two, 33-31, but Catherine Kelly nailed a 3-pointer with 6:30 minutes to go to start an 8-2 spurt that included another triple by Kelly.

                                   

Kelly finished with a game-high 22 points and talked about the victory.

Kendall Sankey added 11 points in the win for Moniteau.

Lily Homan paced North Clarion with 16 points.

Moniteau will face Redbank Valley in Saturday’s title game at 8 p.m. at Tippin Gym.

REDBANK VALLEY 58, CLARION 24

CLARION, Pa. – Using a 14-3 run in the final four minutes of the first half, including an 11-0 spurt to end the half, Redbank Valley turned a close game into a 58-24 blowout win in the KSAC semifinals at PennWest Clarion’s Tippin Gym.

The Lady Bulldogs led 16-7 midway through the second quarter when Caylen Rearick hit a 3-pointer.

That triple seemed to jump-start Redbank Valley’s offense which proceeded to nearly double its point total in the final four minutes.

After Sophie Babington hit a three to get Clarion back within nine, 19-10, freshman Quinn White came off the bench and hit back-to-back triples to expand the lead to 15, 25-10, before Mylee Harmon got a steal and a hoop to make it 27-10. Izzy Bond then nailed a 3-pointer to close out the scoring in the half giving Redbank Valley a 30-10 halftime lead.

Rearick, who hit a pair of second-quarter 3-pointers to account for her six points, talked about the victory.

White and Harmon led a balanced Redbank Valley effort with 14 points each. It was a career-high for White.

Alyssa Bowser chipped in nine points, including eight in the third quarter, for the Lady Bulldogs while Alivia Huffman had eight points.

Taylor Alston had 11 points, nine in the second half, to lead Clarion.

Redbank Valley will take on Moniteau in the title game at 8 p.m. Saturday at Tippin Gym.
