Brookville Holds ECC to All-Time Low 16 Points while Securing at Least a Tie for D9 League Title; Miller Leads Clearfield to Win

Conner Marshall of Brookville

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – Limiting Elk County Catholic to a school-record-low 16 points, Brookville claimed at least a tie for the D9 League title with a 34-16 win over the visiting Crusaders.

The Raiders (17-2, 8-1 D9 LEague), who lost 50-47 at ECC in mid-December, limited the Crusaders to 4 of 41 from the field. The previous low-point total for ECC (18-2, 6-2) was 19 points in a PIAA playoff loss to Sewickley Academy in 2010.

Brookville, winners of 14 in a row since that loss, overcame deep foul trouble to its top two players – Clayton Cook and Jack Pete to get the win.

Cook picked up three first-half fouls and a fourth in the third quarter, Pete had two in the first half and ended up fouling out with just over two minutes left.

But despite the foul trouble, Brookville was able to take a 15-8 halftime lead and a 20-13 advantage going to the fourth quarter.

It took ECC over 5 ½ minutes to even score – two Michael Jacobs’ free throws accounted for the lone points for the visitors in the first quarter – and until there was 3:28 left in the first half to score a basket – a bucket by Colby Nussbaum.

But Brookville wasn’t able to pull away because the Raiders’ offense wasn’t much better.

After scoring 10 first-quarter point, ECC limited Brookville to just five in each of the next two frames before the Raiders were able to pull away in the fourth quarter thanks to a strong free-throw shooting that saw them go 13 of 17 from the free-throw line in the quarter.

Conner Marshall was 8 of 10 in the fourth quarter from the line and scored a game-high 11 points.

Marshall was named the Allegheny Grille of Foxburg Player of the Game and talked about the win.

Cook also was strong from the line in the final eight minutes hitting on 5 of 6 to help seal the win. He finished with nine points.

Pete had a game-high 11 rebounds to go with three points.

Jacobs led ECC with six points with Nussbaum adding five points and seven rebounds.

The one bright spot for the Crusaders was the offensive rebounding, as they gathered in 16 offensive boards. Unfortunately for them, very few resulted in points.

To make matters worse for ECC, late in the game they suffered a potentially season-ending injury to Jordan Wasko, who hurt something in his right leg sprawling out for a ball. Wasko couldn’t put weight on his leg, and went to the trainer’s room on crutches.

Brookville can secure its second straight outright D9 League title with a win at Bradford Friday or a loss by ECC against St. Marys Friday or Bradford Feb. 14.
