April 6, 2022 D10 BB/SB: Combined No-No for Saegertown; Sharon, Hickory Walk-Off; Franklin Pitching Dominates

SAEGERTOWN, Pa. – Henry Shaffer pitched 6 ⅓ innings of hitless baseball, with Landon Caldwell finishing off the combined no-no in Saegertown’s 9-0 win over Cochranton.

Shaffer was dominant, allowing just one walk and striking out 15 in 6 ⅓ innings. Caldwell got the final two outs, walking one and striking out two. Shaffer threw 61 of his 78 pitches for strikes.

Shaffer also got it done at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Caldwell also drove in two runs.

FRANKLIN 5, GIRARD

GIRARD, Pa. – Luke Guth tossed five shutout innings as Franklin blanked Girard, 5-0.

   

                  

Guth struck out 13 in five innings of work, allowing just two hits and one walk. Ethan Nightingale tossed two hitless innings, striking out five and walking one.

At the plate, Kyle Alexander got things started for Franklin with a solo home run in the first, with Noah Kockler knocking in the second run of the inning with an RBI single.

Kockler added a two-run single in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Austin Shady took the loss for Girard, allowing three runs (two earned) in four innings, striking out six, and walking two.

SHARON 7, SLIPPERY ROCK 6, 8 innings

                          

SHARON, Pa. – Mikey Rodriques delivered a walk-off RBI double to lift Sharon to a 7-6 win over Slippery Rock.

Slippery Rock took a 6-3 lead in the top of the seventh on a Shane Thompson RBI single and a Brett Galcik fielder’s choice, but Sharon came roaring back in the bottom of the inning to force extras.

Dante Currie cut it to 6-4 on an RBI double and the very next better, Hayden Scarmack belted a 2-run home run to tie the game. This all came with no outs.

Garrett Hoffman got the win in relief for Sharon, allowing two runs in two innings with three walks and one strikeout.

               

Thompson took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) in one inning of work.

Rodriques finished 2-for-3 with three RBI for Sharon, while Peyton Koss was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

For Slippery Rock, Ethan Drushel and Thompson were both 3-for-4, while Galcik had a pair of RBI.

HICKORY 12, CONNEAUT (Pa.) 11

HERMITAGE, Pa. – DJ Donatelli’s walk-off RBI single lifted Hickory to a 12-11 win over Conneaut.

Conneaut scored five times in the top of the sixth to take a 10-7 lead. Gavin White delivered an RBI single, Dawson Thomas cleared the bases with a 3-run double, and Trent Roncaglione put the finishing touches on the inning with an RBI single.

Hickory came back to tie the game, 10-10, in the bottom half of the inning, with Joey Fazzone hitting a bases-clearing triple with the bases loaded.

Luca Bertolasio got the win in relief with a scoreless inning. Jordan Kullen took the loss, allowing one run in one inning.

Fazzone finished with four RBI for the Hornets, while Clay Wiesen was 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs and Bertolasio 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and four runs scored.

White drove in three runs for Conneaut and Thomas and Ryan Richardson two each.

            

WEST MIDDLESEX 5, CONNEAUT (OHIO) 1

CONNEAUT, OHIO – West Middlesex scored three runs in the sixth inning, taking a 5-0 lead in what was ultimately a 5-1 win over Conneaut.

Evan Gilson delivered an RBI single in the inning and Blaise Fox an RBI groundout. The Big Reds’ offense also took advantage of six Conneaut errors.

Gilson was effective in getting the win on the mound, tossing five innings and giving up just one run on five hits, walking four and striking out five. Devin Gruver tossed two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three.

Patrick Kantola took the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) in five innings on three hits, striking out four and walking four.

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS 19, UNION CITY 9

UNION CITY, Pa. – Brock Cunningham and Alex Dubet drove in four runs each as Cambridge Springs powered past Union City, 19-9.

The Blue Devils scored in every inning, including nine runs over the final two frames. They also took advantage of 11 Union City errors.

Cunningham went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, while Nathan Held was 2-for-6 with three RBI, while Preston Gorton and Josh Gorton drove in two runs each.

Brady Jardina got the win, allowing five unearned runs in three innings, striking out three, and walking one on four hits.

For Union City, Miles McCaslin and Matt Bennett drove in two runs each, while Bryce Drayer was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs and Kyler Shaffer was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.

McCaslin took the loss, allowing nine runs (five earned) in 3 ⅔ innings, striking out five and walking two on seven hits.

HARBOR CREEK 18, WARREN 3, 3 innings

HARBORCREEK, Pa. – Harbor Creek scored 13 runs in the first inning on its way to an 18-3 win over Warren.

The Huskies did all their damage on just seven hits, taking advantage of eight walks and four errors by the Dragons.

The Huskies did hit three long balls as Eli Moon, Trent Sunafrank and Alex Maldonado all went deep. All three players drove in four runs each, while Gio Barbato was 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.

Brady Rzodkiewicz got the win, tossing three innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits, striking out five without issuing a walk.

Warren actually took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first Eric Dippold and Paul Smith had RBI singles and Owen Blum had a sac fly.

Ben Sowa took the loss, allowing four runs in ⅓ of an inning, walking three, and striking out one.

WILMINGTON 10, KENNEDY CATHOLIC 0, 5 innings

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Garrett Heller drove in three runs as Wilmington powered past Kennedy Catholic, 10-0.

Isaac Schleich (three innings) and Tyler Mikulin (two innings) combined on a two-hitter, striking out eight and walking two.

Rocky Serafino was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs, and Ben Miller was 2-for-3 with four runs and an RBI.

MEADVILLE 8, GROVE CITY 7

MEADVILLE, Pa. – A late Grove City rally came up just short, as Meadville earned an 8-7 win.

With a runner on and two outs, Brady Walker induced a flyout to end the game. Walker tossed five innings of relief to get the win, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits, striking out five without issuing a walk.

Owen Garvey got a five-run fourth inning for Meadville started with a bases-loaded walk, which was followed by a two-run single from Mason Walker and a two-run double off the bat of Carson McGowan.

Gavin Beck was 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Bulldogs, while Heath Kilest was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Coldan Barr was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Grove City, while John Hake was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Kamden Martin also drove in a run.

Hake took the loss, allowing five runs (all unearned) in two innings on five hits, striking out three and walking one.

ROCKY GROVE 17, EISENHOWER 2, 4 innings

SUGARCREEK BOROUGH, Pa. – Aaron Burkahrdt went 3-for-4 with four RBI as Rocky Grove powered to a 17-2 win over Eisenhower.

The Orioles scored 12 runs in the first inning, with Reece Henderson also going 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and three runs. Burkhardt doubled and tripled.

Nine different Rocky Grove players had at least one RBI. Isaac Clayton finished 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.

Four different Rocky Grove pitchers combined on a two-hitter, striking out four and walking two.

Cole Chapman had both of Eisenhower’s hits.

Garrett Jensen took the loss, allowing 11 earned runs in ⅔ of an innings, walking three and striking out one on nine hits.

TITUSVILLE 11, NORTHWESTERN 2

ALBION, Pa. – Titusville scored all 11 of its runs over the final four innings, including six in the seventh of an 11-2 win over Northwestern.

Tyler Durstine was strong over five innings, allowing just two runs on two hits and one walk, striking out nine. Kolin Baker pitched two innings of scoreless relief, striking out four.

Hunter Thomas drove in a pair of runs for the Rockets, while Kasen Neely, Ashton Burleigh, and Brock Covell all recorded two hits. Covell also scored three runs.

Nick Timm allowed five runs (one earned) in 5 ⅔ innings for Northwestern, striking out five and allowing five hits, walking three.

MERCYHURST PREP 8, SENECA 1

WATTSBURG, Pa. – Ryan Gates (four innings) and Noah Learn (three innings) combined on a two-hitter as Mercyhurst Prep beat Seneca, 8-1.

Gates struck out four and Learn two.

The Lakers scored four runs in the first inning. Logan Wells was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Mike Nelligan was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Christian Wieczorek took the loss, going 5 ⅔ innings and allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out three.

MAPLEWOOD 7, IROQUOIS 4

GUYS MILLS, Pa. – Maplewood jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings en route to a 7-4 win over Iroquois.

Stuart Hochstetler was strong in earning the win, tossing six innings and allowing just two runs on five hits, walking two and striking out seven.

Hochstetler and Elliott Beuchat both had two hits and two runs scored for the Tigers, while Jesse McFadden went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Andrew Proper also drove in two runs.

Gavin Lewis and Ethan Burroughs both went 1-for-3 with two RB for Iroquois.

SAEGERTOWN 9, COCHRANTON 0

SHARON 9, TITUSVILLE 2

SHARON, Pa. – Miranda Metro turned in another dominant outing, striking out 14 as Sharon beat Titusville, 9-2.

Metro allowed just four hits and walked five.

Metro also drove in two runs, while Iresha Norris belted a seventh-inning grand slam to put the finishing touches on the win.

Hannah Peterson had an RBI double for Titusville.

Audrey Herman allowed just one earned run on three hits, walking eight and striking out eight.

MCDOWELL 21, ERIE 0, 3 innings

ERIE, Pa. – Kaitlin Enzbenner, Hannah Powierza and Lexi Biel all homered to send McDowell to a 21-0 win over Erie.

Enzbrenner drove in four runs and Biel and Powierza three each.

Hilary Sissem was also 3-for-3 with three runs and Taytum Iavarone was 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs.

Gabriella DeLuca tossed two perfect innings with five strikeouts and Rylee Peters a scoreless frame with a strikeout.
