Sixth Sense: Prep Outlasts St. Francis in Six Overtime Classic

ERIE, Pa. – In a game that tied for the longest in history involving a District 10 team, Cathedral Prep outlasted St. Francis in a 78-72, 6-overtime classic.

Luke Costello’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Joe Himes in the sixth overtime was the difference after the Ramblers got stops in both the fifth and sixth overtimes.

The game is tied for the second longest in PIAA history, with Cumberland Valley’s 62-61 win over Central Dauphin on Dec. 5, 2015 in the District 3 Class 4A title game serving as the only one that has gone longer, per PAFootballNews.com

It’s also tied for the longest game ever involving a District 10 team, matching Warren’s 52-45 win over Meadville in six overtimes on Oct. 22, 2004.

            

Costello’s touchdown pass to Himes to end the game was the second time the duo connected for a score in the contest. Costello threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns in the game and ran for another.

Dajoure Hollingsworth had a monster game for the Ramblers, accounting for  240 yards rushing and four touchdowns, including a 1-yarder in the first overtime and a 3-yarder in the third overtime.

In the second overtime, Costello connected with Maxim Spence for a touchdown.

Ryan Welka connected with Jeremiah Neely for a touchdown in the first overtime for St. Francis, while Terrence Pendergrass scored on touchdown runs in both the second, third and fourth overtimes.

Suhtaun Lewis scored on a 10-yard run for Prep in the second overtime, his second touchdown run of the game. Both teams converted 2-point conversion attempts in each of the first four overtimes.

                          

Hollingsworth scored on touchdown runs of 2 and 68 yards in the first quarter, with Costello’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Himes making it 21-6 in the second quarter.

Welka threw a pair of second-quarter touchdown passes, including a 52-yarder to Kynan Ulagna that got St. Francis within two, 28-26 at halftime. Neely also had a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter, while Lewis scored on a 20-yard run for the Ramblers in the second.

St. Francis took its first lead of the game on Welka’s 31-yard touchdown pass to Neely to start the third quarter. Welka threw for four touchdowns, while Pendergrass had four rushing touchdowns for St. Francis.

St. Francis led 40-34 going to the fourth, but Costello’s 34-yard touchdown pass to Griffin Potts in the fourth quarter helped force overtime.

FORT LEBOEUF 36, FAIRVIEW 35, 3 overtimes

WATERFORD, Pa. – Conner McChesney’s touchdown run in the third overtime coupled with his 2-point conversion run lifted Fort LeBoeuf to a dramatic 36-35, triple overtime win over Fairview.

Fort LeBoeuf led 7-3 going to the fourth quarter when the fireworks started.

Aiden Lesik, who scored on a 58-yard run in the first quarter, scored his second touchdown to make it 14-3 Bison on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Fairview rallied, as Vinny Campoli scored on an 11-yard run, the Tigers converted the 2-point conversion, and Michael Gennuso drilled a 45-yard field goal late to help send the game to overtime.

The two teams traded jabs in the first two overtimes, as Campoli threw a touchdown pass to Jake Harkness and McChesney scored on a 2-yard run (both kicks failed).

                        

In the second overtime, LeBoeuf’s Hunter Villa scored on a 6-yard run and Campoli a 1-yard run (both teams converted 2-point conversions).

Harkness hauled in a 6-yard touchdown pass from Campoli in the third overtime and the PAT was good, setting the state for McChesney’s game-winning touchdown and 2-point run.

Lesik finished with 160 yards on the ground for LeBoeuf.

Campoli, meanwhile, had 115 yards passing and 73 rushing for Fairview.

MCDOWELL 47, ERIE 21

ERIE, Pa. – Blayze Myers threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns as McDowell earned a 47-21 Region 6 win over Erie.

The Trojans led 26-7 at halftime, with Stephon Porter accounting for three first-half touchdowns on throws of 15 and 7 yards from Myers, as well as a 14-yard touchdown run.

Myers’ other first half touchdown pass was a 3-yarder to Brady Kramer.

McDowell came out and scored three straight touchdowns in the third quarter on the strength of Myers’ 10-yard run, a Dominic Beraducci 1-yard run and an Eric Neavins to make it 47-7 and put the running clock into effect.

Beraducci led a balanced Trojans’ ground game with 60 yards on 10 carries, while Porter had 65 yards receiving and 43 rushing. James Zigler Jr. led McDowell with 82 yards receiving on four receptions.

         

EISENHOWER 35, SENECA 6

WATTSBURG, Pa. – Eisenhower scored on each of its first three drives of the game on its way to a 35-6 win over Seneca.

The Knights scored on a 13-yard touchdown run by Cole Kellogg just 1:42 into the game.

Shawn Pascuzzi accounted for three total touchdowns in the game, beginning with a 46-yard run and followed that up with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Logan Penley.

Nolan Seabury scored Seneca’s lone touchdown of the game after Penley’s touchdown on a 46-yard touchdown run.

Tucker Lindell scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in the second half for Eisenhower, while Pascuzzi found Camron Jakubczak for a 25-yard touchdown to close the scoring.

Pascuzzi threw for 109 yards and rushed for 101 more, while Penley had 102 yards on the ground.

CONNEAUT 24, WARREN 12

WARREN, Pa. – Ben Easler accounted for all but two of Conneaut’s points as the Eagles defeated Warren, 24-12, for their second road win since 2020.

Easler threw a pair of touchdown passes, ran in another score, and had a 2-point conversion run and pass to earn Allegheny Grille of Foxburg Player of the Game honors.

“This season’s been awesome for us just being able to be competitive in games and win games. It’s a great feeling, especially considering how far we’ve come,” Easler said in his Cole Orthodontic Associates postgame interview.

Easler opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Green midway through the second quarter. Joe Furgiuele ran in the conversion to give the Eagles an 8-0 lead.

After the Eagles recovered an onside kick to start the third quarter, Easler finished the drive with a 16-yard run. He connected with Logan Groover on the conversion to double Conneaut’s lead to 16-0.

Warren responded with a 60-yard drive that chewed nearly eight minutes off the clock. Eric Dippold ran it in from five yards out to put the Dragons on the board. Conneaut blocked the PAT to keep it a two-possession game at 16-6.

Conneaut got a turnover on downs just past the midpoint of the fourth quarter. On the first play, Easler dropped back looking for a little swing to his tight end. That route covered, Easler looked downfield and hit Max Getz at midfield. Getz then sprinted into the end zone for a 69-yard touchdown.

“Honestly, that was supposed to be a little slip pass to my tight end outside, but he got blown up so I had to improvise a little bit and Max Getz made a play for me and I can’t thank him enough,” Easler said.

Warren answered back with a hook-and-lateral. Dippold threw to Chase Myers, who then lateraled to Johnny Corbett. Corbett went the remaining 40 yards down the sideline to paydirt.

Conneaut’s defense held the Warren running game in check, limiting the Dragons to just 25 yards on 18 carries.

Dippold finished 12-24 passing for 127 yards. Peyton Hammerbeck had four receptions for 57 yards, and Corbett finished with 68 total yards.

Easler was 10-19 for 163 yards with two touchdowns and an interception through the air and added 49 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Furgiuele had seven carries for 45 yards and Getz had five receptions for 107 yards and a score.

CORRY 29, HARBOR CREEK 21

HARBORCREEK, Pa. – Corry outscored Harbor Creek 23-0 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 29-21 win.

Nolan Carey threw for 330 yards and a pair of touchdown passes to Rylan Smith and Markus Lambert covering 20 and 14 yards and Smith to take a 22-21 lead (they converted both 2-point conversions), and Smith pounced on a fumble in the end zone to help put the game away.

Carey accounted for three total touchdowns, as he also scored on a 4-yard run in the first half and finished with 78 yards on the ground.

Tysean Jones finished with 123 yards and a touchdown on the ground for Harbor Creek, while Heath Betza had a first half touchdown run and Calvin Szklenski a first-half pick six.

Smith led Corry with 150 yards receiving.

NORTH EAST 38, GENERAL MCLANE 12

NORTH EAST, Pa. – Jackson Humes tossed a pair of third-quarter touchdown passes as North East pulled away for a 38-12 win over General McLane

Isaac Zeitz opened the game with a 42-yard touchdown run for GM, but it was all North East after that.

Humes’ touchdown passes in the third quarter went to Jamari Curlett and Donnell Gamble, with Humes also scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run.

Humes accounted for four total touchdowns, as he also had a first half score to Landon Kelly.

Logan Lattimore capped the night for North East with an 84-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

UNION CITY 14, IROQUOIS 6

UNION CITY, Pa. – Skylar Olmstead scored on touchdown runs in the second and fourth quarters and finished with 203 yards rushing to help lift Union City to a 14-6 win over Iroquois.

Olmstead’s runs covered 61 and 24 yards, the latter of which gave the Bears a 14-0 lead.

Christian Krysiak scored on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter for Iroquois.

Austin Brown also had 52 yards on the ground for Union City.
