Rough Day for District 9 and 10 Volleyball Teams

   

Outside of Clarion’s 3-0 win over West Shamokin, it was a rough afternoon for District 9 and District 10 volleyball teams Saturday with the squad losing the other four matches they were involved in.

PHILIPSBURG-OSCEOLA 3, MAPLEWOOD 2

GUYS MILLS, Pa. – Visiting Philipsburg-Osceola, the District 6 champion, rallied to beat District 10 champion Maplewood, 3-2 (9-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-23, 15-9), in the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinals.

Reese Hazelton, only a freshman, led the Mounties with 38 kills.

Sadie Thomas led the way in the loss for the Lady Tigers with 29 kills and 11 digs, while Chloe Leech added 23 kills and 15 digs.

            

Also for Maplewood on offense, Avery Brunot and Kaysea Thomas each had four kills.

Madison Crawford led the Lady Tigers on defense with 18 digs, and Bailey Varndell ran the offense with 58 set assists.

BISHOP CANEVIN 3, SAEGERTOWN 1

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Behind 13 kills from Gillian Golupski, WPIAL champion Bishop Canevin knocked off District 10 champion Saegertown, 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-17, 25-21) in the PIAA Class 1A quarterfinals.

Abbie Maziarz added nine kills and seven blocks in the win, while Keira Kozlowski had six kills and seven aces.

                          

Averie Braymer paced Saegertown with 24 kills with Brittany Houck adding nine kills and 18 digs, and Amber Costello 23 digs.

Ava Jones ran the offense for the Lady Panthers with 37 set assists and added seven digs.

NORTH CATHOLIC 3, REDBANK VALLEY 0

CRANBERRY TWP., Pa. – North Catholic, the No. 1 ranked team in the state in Class 2A, swept visiting Redbank Valley out of the PIAA Class 2a quarterfinals with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-15) win.

Redbank Valley, whose only two losses this year came again teams currently ranked No. 1 in the state (Clarion is the other in Class 1A) and in the PIAA semifinals, was led by seven kills from Montana Hetrick and five kills from Alivia Huffman.

Brianna Minich added four kills and a block for the Lady Bulldogs, who also got 19 digs from Brynn Rearick and 10 digs from Caylen Rearick. Ryley Pago chipped in three kills and two blocks.

Brooke Holben set up the offense for Redbank Valley with 14 set assists.

The Lady Bulldogs finished 21-2 and had their 20-game win streak snapped with the loss.

NORTH ALLEGHENY 3, MCDOWELL 0

WEXFORD, Pa. – WPIAL champion North Allegheny had little trouble with visiting McDowell, the District 10 champion, rolling to a 3-0 (25-8, 25-8, 25-12) win in the PIAA Class 4A girls’ quarterfinals.

                        

The three-time defending PIAA champion Tigers got seven kills from Paige Miller and six each from Ella Deeter and Mia Truman, while Paige Morningstar ran the offense with 25 set assists.

McDowell’s best stats came on defense where Kelly Miller led the way with seven digs and Ava Fetzner and Abby Sobleski each added six digs.
