DUBOIS, Pa. – A year after getting to the semifinals, Punxsutawney’s Emily McMahan completed the final step to a District 9 Class 2A girls’ individual tennis title on Tuesday.
Rewatch the match:
McMahan topped St. Marys’ Roan Lion, 6-1, 6-2 to capture the D9 title at DuBois High School.
“It felt really good to get the whole way through, just knowing that I almost had it last year,” McMahan said. “This year I was able to do it.”

The win over Lion was part of an impressive run for McMahan, which began on Monday with a 10-0 quarterfinal win over Clearfield’s Maddy Johnson.
McMahan followed that up with a 6-1, 6-2 win over St. Marys’ Maddy Wittman.
Lion, meanwhile, earned a 10-5 win over Bradford’s Lilly Kemick in the quarterfinals, followed by a 6-4, 6-2 win over Elk County Catholic’s Megan Emmert.
With the win, McMahan advances to play the WPIAL runner-up at the PIAA individual championships on Nov. 3 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
