Oct. 6., 2020 Tennis/Golf Recaps: Oil City edges Grove City; Cochranton’s Shannon sets course record

OIL CITY, Pa. – Thanks to a pair of 3-set doubles wins, Oil City edged Keystone 3-2 in tennis action.

Cassidy Sutley and Emily Bly earned a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win, while Kylie Copley and Barren Walters notched a 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 victory.

At No. 1 singles, Grove City’s Mary Coulter earned a 6-2, 6-0 win, while Oil City’s Emily Russell won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 and Grove City’s Cara Severson 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3

VILLA 5, WARREN 0

WARREN, Pa. – Tara Thomas (6-0, 6-0), Ryleigh Valone (6-1, 6-0) and Basil Bannister (6-3, 7-5) swept their singles matches as Villa swept Warren.

The doubles teams of Abby Consiglio-Anne Marie Prichard (6-1, 6-0) and Grace Teed and Mary McGovern (6-1, 6-2) were also victorious for the Victors.

COCHRANTON BOYS EDGE CONNEAUT

COCHRANTON, Pa. – Cochranton edged the Conneaut boys 26-29, but it was Cochranton’s Meaera Shannon who stole the show. Shannon broke the Cochranton course record with a time of 18:25.

There was no team scoring in the girls’ race.

Chase Miller (17:24) and Kyler Woolstrum (17:43) went 1-2 in the boys race to help the Cardinals to victory.

Conneaut’s Jordan Cullen (17:44) and Nathaniel Turner (17:46) finished just behind Woolstrum.

Madison Simmerman (22:16) was the top Conneaut girls’ finisher.

NORTH CLARION BOYS TRIUMPH

FRILLS CORNERS, Pa. – North Clarion hosted Keystone in their last home cross country meet of the season.  The varsity boys defeated Keystone 21-38. There was no team scoring in the girls’ race.

North Clarion senior Rachel Bauer won the girls race, with her fastest time ever on the North Clarion course (21:26). The Wolves placed eight runners before the first Panther finished:  Nicole Fair, Brynn Siegel, Jordyn Hendrickson, Kayla Aaron, Emma Buckley, Katie Bauer and Kaylee Castner.

Samanth Heller (9th) finished first for Keystone. Panther Koby Buzzard won the boys race in a time of 18:23, edging out North Clarion’s Kaine McFarland in the last 300 meters of the race.  Also scoring for the Wolves were Aiden Thomas third, Patrick Young forth, Aaron Lencer fifth and Owen Shaffer seventh.

PREP/VILLA TOP MERCYHURST PREP

ERIE, Pa. – It was a sweep for Cathedral Prep and Villa.

In the boys race, Kaemen Smith placed first overall. Andrew Brown was second, Noah Handzel finished third, Kody Klein was fifth while Luke Brown crossed ninth.

The girls race was won by Villa, 23-35. Sarah Clark was first overall, Saide Latouf fourth, Rue Burkett fifth, Helen Ann McCormick sixth, Caitlin Dugan was seventh and Chloe Eubank finished eighth.
