Oct. 7, 2020 Tennis Recaps: Punxsutawney edges DuBois

DUBOIS, Pa. – Punxsutawney won three of four singles matches to edge DuBois, 4-3 on Wednesday.

Chloe Presloid topped Jessica Askey, 7-5, 6-0, followed by wins from Jadyn McMahon over Grace Askey (6-4, 6-1) and Emily McMahon over Stephanie Juarez (6-2, 6-0) for the Lady Chucks.

“We only had one practice since the majority were in quarantine, so were were a little rusty,” noted DuBois coach Lori Sabatose.

At No. 4 singles, DuBois’ Olivia Reed topped Emily McMahon, 6-2, 6-4.

The DuBois No. 1 doubles team of the Askeys earned an 8-4 win, with the Punxsy team of Allie Melce and Hannah Pearce earning an 8-5 win at No. 2. Cassie Lanzoni and Claire Shaffer notched an 8-3 victory to secure the win for Punxsutawney.

“Excellent performance by the Askeys at No. 1 doubles,” noted Sabatose.

Class AAA singles champ Jess Askey and the doubles champions (Grace Askey-Steph Juarez) will compete in the PIAA subregional hosted by DuBois against District 10 on Oct. 22.

HICKORY 5, GREENVILLE 0

GREENVILLE, Pa. – Daphne Borowicz, Nicolette Leonard and Giada Bertolasio all won their singles matches to help Hickory to a sweep of Greenville.

The doubles’ teams of Ava Spielvogle-Abbie Bender and Nora Logue-Hannah Beighley were also victorious for the Hornets.
