McDowell Wins D10 4A Volleyball Crown; Franklin, Harbor Creek, Mercyhurst Prep Advance in 2A

ERIE, Pa. – McDowell won its 21st District 10 volleyball title sweeping its way past Erie, 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-9) in the Class 4A title game Tuesday night at the Hagerty Event Center in Erie.

Ava Fetzner led a balanced effort by the Trojans on offense with eight kills while Sophia Nestor added six kills.

Gabby DeLuca was strong from the service line for McDowell with six aces while adding eight digs.

Chase Rech chipped in nine digs in the win, while Taylor Rech had five digs.

            

Halle Guentner ran the offense for McDowell with 24 set assists and completed a double-double with 11 digs.

The PIAA bracket has the Trojans set to face the District 8 (Pittsburgh City League) champion in a subregional.

 

MEADVILLE, Pa. – After blowing a two-set to none lead, Harbor Creek could have/should have been reeling going into the decisive fifth set.

But the ninth-seeded Huskies dug deep and raced past eighth-seeded Greenville, 15-3, in the set to escape Meadville with a 3-2 (25-13, 25-20, 24-26, 23-25, 15-3) victory in the opening round of the District 10 Class 2A playoffs.

                          

Hannah Smith led Harbor Creek with 20 kills with Liz Gunther adding 14 kills and Elise Benim chipping in nine kills. Taylor Vickey also had seven kills.

Aly Hester was a stalwart on defense for the Huskies with 17 digs, and Talon King and Addison Lucas combined to run the offense with 45 set assists led by King with 26. Lucas chipped in 19 set assists.

Josie Hart had 12 kills for Greenville with Kristina Varion adding 10 kills.

Bella Gehly and Marissa Godfrey ran the offense for the Trojans with a combined 29 set assists paced by Gehly’s 16.

Harbor Creek will face top-seeded Corry in the quarterfinals on Thursday, Oct. 26, at a time and place to be announced.

FRANKLIN 3, FORT LEBOEUF 1

COCHRANTON, Pa. – Estella Adams had 21 set assists as 10th-seeded Franklin stunned seventh-seeded Fort LeBoeuf, 3-1 (25-22, 13-25, 28-26, 25-23) at Cochranton High School.

Jamie Blum paced the Knights with seven kills while adding three blocks, Katie Boal had three blocks, and Jennifer Blum led the defense with 21 digs.

Kayleigh Anderson led Fort LeBoeuf with 12 kills with Mya Stoltz adding 10 kills. Stolz also had five blocks and Anderson four aces.

Bella Johnson paced the Bison on defense with 25 digs with Ryan Shields adding 19 digs.

                        

Mackenzie Galdon (16 set assists), Kiernan Skelton (12 set assists), and Tessa Bellis (10 set assists) ran the offense for Fort LeBoeuf.

Franklin will face second-seeded Saegertown in the quarterfinals on Thursday, Oct. 26, at a site and time to be announced.

MERCYHURST PREP 3, SHARPSVILLE 2

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Fifth-seeded Mercyhurst Prep used a couple of lopsided sets to hold off 12th-seeded Sharpsville, 3-2 (25-18, 19-25, 25-5, 18-25, 15-5).

Addica Sperry and Olivia Kulyk combined for 38 kills and 50 digs to lead the way for the Lakers.

         

Sperry had 20 kills and 26 digs and Kulyk added 18 kills and 24 digs.

Julia Seth ran the offense for Mercyhurst Prep with 45 set assists while adding 21 digs, Da’Zhana Jordan chipped in 15 digs, and Mya Fuller added 12 digs.

Emma Brest had 11 kills and 20 digs for Sharpsville with Lillian Morrison adding 10 digs.

Ryleigh Fry ran the offense for the Blue Devils with 21 set assists and finished off a double-double with 11 digs.

Mercyhurst Prep will take on fourth-seeded Slippery Rock in the quarterfinal on Thursday, Oct. 26, at a site and time to be announced.
