PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – District 9 has released information on its Class 1A boys’ and girls’ fifth-place consolation brackets.

A fifth-place consolation bracket – to be contested among the four teams who lost in the quarterfinals – was needed after the PIAA awarded a fifth PIAA playoff spot to the district for the 2021 and 2022 seasons (The 2021 tournament ended up being a champions-only tournament because of COVID-19).
Instead of using a “follow-the-leader” format where the fifth-place team would be the team that lost to the eventual champion, a four-team bracket among the quarterfinal losers was chosen.
Here are the first-round matchups. Dates, times, and locations for the fifth-place consolation games have not been announced at this time.

Wednesday, March 2
(8) Clarion at (4) Cameron County, 7 p.m.
(7) Union at (6) Johnsonburg, 7 p.m.
GIRLS
Tuesday, March 1
(8) Northern Potter at (4) DuBois Central Catholic, 7 p.m.
(10) Clarion vs. (6) Union, 7 p.m. at A-C Valley (Union’s gym was not available)
