CLARION, Pa. – Danny Schweitzer’s goal with just under 24 minutes to play proved to be the difference in Clarion-Limestone’s 3-2 win over Brockway in the District 9 Class 1A boys’ soccer quarterfinals at Wiser Field in Clarion.

Rewatch the match

Schweitzer’s tally put the Lions up 3-1 at the time, and second-seeded C-L survived a late goal from Caleb Daugherty (3:31 left) to hold off seventh-seeded Brockway.

An own goal by the Rovers also played a pivotal role in the game.

The own goal came with 33:41 left in the contest and was 3:33 after Dylan Bash had brought Brockway even with a penalty kick tally less than two minutes into the second half.

The own goal occurred when a Rover player accidentally headed a free kick from Wyatt Boyden past Brockway keeper Jacob Maze. The free kick occurred just outside the upper right-side of the box.

It was the second time in the contest C-L scored on a free kick situation just outside of the box.

Thomas Uckert started the scoring for the Lions when he blasted home a goal midway through the first half after a foul occurred near the top of the box.

C-L goalie Isaac Lerch and defender Brady Pierce helped keep the lead at 1-0 Lions at halftime with successive saves on Brockway corner late in the half.

First, Lurch was able to punch a ball over the net on the first corner, then Pierce was in the right place at the right time to clear another corner that was headed toward the back of the net.

Pierce had an all-around strong defensive game and was named the Allegheny Grille of Foxburg Player of the Match.

He talked about the win on the Cole Orthodontic Associates postgame interview.
