Brookville Earns First Round Win at PIAA Class 2A Team Wrestling Championships

HERSHEY, Pa. – The District 9 champion Brookville Raiders got off to a strong start at the PIAA Class 2A team wrestling championships, earning a 31-30 win over WPIAL third-place finisher Burgettstown.

                        

The Raiders built a 31-18 lead heading into the final two bouts to secure the match. With the match in hand, the Raiders didn’t have to send out state-ranked wrestlers Owen Reinsel or Brayden Kunselman in the final two bouts.

Burgettstown jumped out to an early 9-0 lead after the first two bouts at 145 and 152, but after that, Brookville began a run of four-straight wins, including major decisions from Coyha Brown, Easton Belfiore and Bryce Rafferty at 160, 172 and 215 respectively, as well as a pin from Jackson Zimmerman in just 31 seconds at 189.

Chris Carroll earned a 14-0 major decision at 106, while Cole Householder got a 3-0 decision at 120 and Logan Oakes secured the win with a 34-second pin at 126.

With the win, the Raiders advance to face Benton, a 36-30 winner over Faith Christian, in the semifinals at noon on Friday.

WEST PERRY 42, HICKORY 23

Hickory got off to a strong start in its Class 2 PIAA opener against West Perry, getting a major decision at 145 from Connor Saylor and a forfeit victory at 145, but it was West Perry that came charging back for a 42-23 win.

Louie Gill, who bumped up to 120 pounds for the Hornets, had his lengthy win-streak snapped via pinfall against Jackson Rush in the third period.

The Hornets did get wins from Ty Holland via major decision at 189, as well as a 9-8 decision from Yuri Figueroa at 215 and a forfeit win at 106.

                          

They will meet Lackawanna Trail in the first round consolations Friday morning.

Corry found tough sledding in its PIAA Class 2A opener against District 11 champion Notre Dame-Green Pond, dropping a 57-6 decision.

Corry will meet Burrell in the first round of consolations.

CLASS 3A

CENTRAL DAUPHIN 34, GENERAL MCLANE 24

                           

General McLane got off to a strong start in its opening-round match at the PIAA championships, but it was District 3 runner-up Central Dauphin that came out with a 34-24 victory.

The Lancers got a pin from Jessi Stempka at the end of the second period at 215 to open the match, which was followed by a 5-3 decision victory for Wilson Spires at 285.

CD won the next five matches, however.

Hudson Spires got a 6-4 decision at 138 for GM, while Magnus Lloyd and Brandon Dedrick received forfeit wins to close the match.

The Lancers will meet District 1 champion Council Rock South in the first round of consolations.
