COCHRANTON, Pa. – Like the General McLane girls’ soccer team, the Cochranton boys’s volleyball team went from second in District 10 to second in the state.

In the third meeting between the teams (they split in the regular season), Mercyhurst Prep knocked off Cochranton for the District 10 Class 2A title, (25-22, 26-28, 25-15, 25-9).

The Cardinals then went to work in the PIAA playoffs, beginning by knocking of WPIAL champion North Catholic, 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-20).

In the win, Chase Miller had 10 kills, while Landon Homa and Noah Cummings had nine kills each and Andrew Custead had 40 assists.

The Cardinals followed up with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-14, 28-30, 25-18) win over District 6 champion West Shamokin, setting up another showdown with Mercyhurst Prep in the semifinals.

In the all-District 10 Class 2A semifinal, the Cardinals beat Mercyhurst Prep, 3-1, 24-26, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23, advancing to the PIAA championship match for the first time in program history and also avenging a loss to the Lakers in the D10 title match in the process.

“Honestly it just took a lot of commitment, and it took our community,” said Chase Miller, who finished with 16 kills. “We have a lot of people supporting us and honestly our community is the biggest reason we were able to go out there and win.”

Custead had 55 assists, while Homa finished with a team-high 20 kills, Dustin Miller had five kills and seven digs, Cummings had six kills and four blocks, Rynd had five kills and five blocks and Dustin Miller had five digs and seven kills.

The Cardinals dream run came to an end at Hershey’s Rec Hall with a 3-0 loss to three-time consecutive state championship Lower Dauphin, but it’s a run the Cardinals and their fans will remember for a long time.
