Rematch: Mercyhurst Prep/Cochranton to Meet For Berth in PIAA 2A Volleyball Final

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – It’s going to be an all-District 10 PIAA semifinal in Class 2A boys’ volleyball.

Mercyhurst Prep and Cochranton will meet on Tuesday for the right to go to the state championship, as Prep knocked off the third-place team from District 3, Manheim Central, 3-1, 25-20, 19-25, 27-25, 25-14.

Cochranton also won in four despite dropping a marathon third set, 25-22, 25-25 28-30, 25-8 against D6 champ West Shamokin.

This marks the second consecutive PIAA semifinal, as Meadville beat Cochranton a year ago to get to State College.

Octavian Sperry led Mercyhurst Prep with 18 kills and also tallied 11 digs, while Gino Baretta had 16 kills and David Bahm nine.

                  

Eli Olszowka and Shawn Ganger directed the offense to the tune of 27 assists each.

The Lakers then beat Cochranton 25-22, 26-28, 25-15, 25-9 in the D10 final on May 31. The two teams split during the regular season, each winning in five sets.

The winner will meet the Lower Dauphin/Exeter winner for the state championship on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Penn State’s rec hall.
