ALBION, Pa. – Just call Sierra Chiesa a trailblazer.

The Northwestern standout had a sophomore season for the ages, becoming the first female wrestler ever to win a District 10 title in boys’ wrestling, and also became the first female to qualify for the PIAA championships and win a match at states.

In the 114-pound weight class, Chiesa dominated all the way through to the finals, beating Reynolds’ Angelo Lemonte, 6-0.

Chiesa spoke about how she’s become a role model for girls in wrestling, numbers which continue to increase by the season.

“People think that girls aren’t as good as the guys,” Chiesa said. “Me doing this shows that girls can be just as good as guys.”

Chiesa won by major decision in the quarterfinals at the Northwest Regional and by pin in the semis before she was pinned by Cranberry’s Dalton Wenner in the 114-pound final.

That was more than good, however, to make her the first female wrestler to make it to the boys’ individual championships.

At states, Chiesa dropped a 6-5 decision in her opening match but came back to earn an 8-5 decision in the first-round consolations, once again making history becoming the first female wrestler to win a match at boys’ states.

Through two seasons at Northwestern, Chiesa owns a record of 66-20, including 35-7 this past season.

She’s just getting started.
