Sheeler, Helsel, Gray Headline 2023 YDL Sports Network Girls’ D9 Bball Awards Powered by All American and Engraving

WARREN, Pa. – For the second consecutive year Otto-Eldred’s Katie Sheeler is the YDL Sports Network/D9and10Sports District 9 girls’ basketball player of the year powered by All American Awards & Engraving.

Sheeler led the Lady Terrors to their first-ever District 9 title and to the PIAA Class 1A quarterfinals for the second consecutive season.

Joining Sheeler as major award winners are Clearfield’s Mia Helsel (Rookie of the Year) and Otto-Eldred head coach Shawn Gray (Chuck Daly Coach of the Year).

Three All-District 9 teams were also awarded.

The first team includes Sheeler, Redbank Valley’s Mylee Harmon and Alivia Huffman, Punxsutawney’s Chloe Presloid and Danielle Griebel, and Elk County Catholic’s Lucy Klawuhn.

                                      

The second team consists of DuBois Central Catholic’s Kayley Risser, Keystone’s Natalie Bowser, Moniteau’s Catherine Kelly, Otto-Eldred’s Anna Merry, Ridgway’s Jenna Kasmerski, and St. Marys’ Jayssa Snelick.

On the third team are Elk County Catholic’s Sami Straub and Emily Mourer, Karns City’s Chloe Fritch and Brooklynn Taylor, North Clarion’s Lily Homan, and Punxsutawney’s Avary Powell.

Award winners and teams were chosen by the staff of the YDL Sports Network in consultation with a select group of District 9 coaches.

Katie Sheeler, Sr., Otto-Eldred – Sheeler led Otto-Eldred to its first-ever District 9 title (Class 1A), a second straight NTL crown, and to the PIAA quarterfinals for the second straight year.

                          

The Lady Terrors finished the season 25-3 overall and 16-0 in the NTL with Sheeler leading the way with a District 9-leading 22.1 points per game, 1.1 points per game higher than the next-best scorer.

A complete player, Sheeler added 5.1 steals, 3.6 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game. She finished her career as Otto-Eldred’s all-time leading scorer with 1,699 career points, the 18th-most points in District 9 history. She hit 85 3-pointers this season and 222 in her career.

As good as Sheeler was during the season, she was even better in the postseason averaging 24.5 ppg in six playoff games scoring 20 or more points five times including three games of at least 30 points in postseason play.

Mia Helsel, Fr., Clearfield – Helsel, the daughter of head coach Missy Helsel, was the leading freshman scorer in District 9 this past season averaging 9.7 points per game. She added 5.4 rebounds, 2.3 steals, and 1.2 assists per game and hit 25 3-pointers.

Shawn Gray, Otto-Eldred – Gray guided Otto-Eldred to its first-ever District 9 title (Class1A), a second straight NTL title (prior to the 2022 title the Lady Terrors hadn’t won an NTL crown since 1979), a second straight trip to the PIAA Class 1A quarterfinals. Otto-Eldred finished the year 25-3, a school record for victories, and 16-0 in the NTL, a second straight unbeaten NTL campaign.

About Chuck Daly: Daly was a 1948 graduate of Kane High School who started his coaching career at Punxsutawney High School (1956-63, 111 wins, D9 title in 1958 and league titles in 1958, 1962, and 1963) before moving into the college and pro ranks where he won two NBA titles with the Detroit Pistons. Daly also coached the 1992 United States Olympic “Dream Team” to a gold medal finish. He was inducted into the James Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994. In addition to coaching the Pistons for nine years going 467-271, he spent a little under a season coaching the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1981-82 and coached the New Jersey Nets and the Orlando Magic in the 1990s. He was also the head coach at Boston College and Penn in the college ranks. The NBA continues to honor his coaching legacy with the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award given annually to a longtime NBA coach’s life in basketball and his “standard of integrity, competitive excellence and tireless promotion” of the game.

About the Chuck Daly Foundation: The Chuck Daly Foundation was formed in Punxsutawney in 2016 by 1960 PAHS graduate George “Butch” White, who played basketball under Daly. The foundation was formed primarily to create scholarships for both male and female student-athletes in both basketball and golf.
