Seven District 9/10 Teams Advance at PIAA Competitive Spirit Championships

HERSHEY, Pa. – A total of seven teams from District 9 and District 10 advanced at the PIAA Competitive Spirit Championships, with four of those teams – Warren (Class 2A Large Varsity), Elk County Catholic (Class 2A Large Varsity), Moniteau (Class 2A Small Varsity) and McDowell (Co-Ed Varsity) bypassing the semifinal round and going straight to Saturday’s finals.

Three other teams – St. Marys (Class 2A Small Varsity), Johnsonburg (Class 2A Large Varsity), and A-C Valley (Co-Ed Varsity) also advanced during Friday’s action at Hershey’s GIANT Center. Those three teams will compete in Saturday’s semifinal round with a chance to advance to the finals.

McDowell, attempting to repeat as PIAA Co-Ed champions, finished first in the Co-Ed prelims with a score of 90.7333, just ahead of Butler at 90.6 The top four teams advanced directly to the finals, with the next four teams competing in the semifinals with a chance to advance. That includes A-C Valley, which finished fifth in the prelims with a score of 79.8667.

The top four teams in the preliminary round in Class 2A Large Varsity advanced directly to the finals, with Elk County Catholic finishing third in the prelims with a score of 84.6667 and Warren fourth with a score of 81.85. Johnsonburg, meanwhile, came in eighth in the prelims with a score of 73.9667 and was the final team in the division to advance to the semifinals.

Moniteau, competing in one of two 15-team Class 2A Small Varsity panels, finished second in Panel A with a score of 80.61667 (Richland was the top team). Their score would have been good enough to finish in the top four in Panel B as well. The top four in each panel go directly to the finals, while teams five through eight will compete in the semifinals with a chance to advance. That’s where St. Marys will be after finishing with a score of 71.23333, good for sixth in Panel B.

Semifinal action gets underway at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, with the finals beginning at 11 a.m.
