Lucky Number Seven: DuBois Beats Clearfield for Seventh Straight D9 Class 3A Volleyball Crown

The 2023 District 9 Class 3A volleyball champions, the DuBois Beavers.

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – Seventh heaven.

Rewatch the match:

DuBois captured its seventh consecutive District 9 Class 3A volleyball title with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-13) win over Clearfield on Wednesday.

It was a total team effort for the Beavers, led by Morgan Pasternak’s 13 kills. Pasternak earned Allegheny Grille of Foxburg Player of the Game honors.

“It’s definitely a bigger one this year, I feel like,” Pasternak said during the Cole Orthodontic Associated postgame interview. “This is my senior year. This is four in a row, seven for our program. It’s really exciting. I’m proud of my team for all of the effort and hard work they’ve put in.”

Ava Barnoick and Alyssa Stevens had six kills each for DuBois, while Grace Prosper had four, with Haley Reed running the offense effectively from her setter position.

DuBois jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first set, and leads of 4-0 in both the second and third, setting the tone for each.

“This year has been one of the most fun years I’ve had just in terms of kids playing together, working hard and getting along,” said DuBois coach Jason Gustafson. “We knew we had a great group coming back.”

Up next for Clearfield is the WPIAL third-place team in the first round of the PIAA playoffs on Tuesday, Nov. 7. The Beavers were scheduled to play the District 8 champion in a subregional, but both of those schools, Carrick and Obama Academy, opted out.
