
DUBOIS, Pa. – Thanks to a pair of wins in doubles matches, Elk County Catholic edged Punxsutawney, 3-2, to win the 2023 District 9 Class 2A team tennis title Wednesday at DuBois High School.

The Lady Crusaders, who lost two of the three singles matches, were dominant in doubles with Melena Piccirillo and Audree Meyer defeating Addison London and Leanne Zampini, 6-1, 6-0, and Anna Biondi and Grace Ames topping Mya Galentine and Olivia Smith, 6-2, 6-2.
The lone ECC player to win in singles action was No. 2 singles Sarah Hasselman, who needed three sets to defeat Oliva Ove, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Punxsutawney got wins at No. 1 singles from District 9 singles champion Emily McMahan, 6-0, 6-3 over Megan Emmert, and at No. 3 singles with Rachael Porada beating Rachael Wolfe, 6-4, 6-2.
ECC will move into the PIAA tournament where it will face the WPIAL champion Oct. 24. The WPIAL championship match isn’t until Oct. 18.
