Back-to-Back: Clearfield Girls Blank St. Marys to Claim Second Straight D9 Class 2A Title

The 2023 District 9 Class 2A girls' soccer champions, the Clearfield Bison.

BROCKWAY, Pa. – Back-to-back.

Rewatch the game:

Alayna Winters had two goals and an assist as top seed Clearfield beat No. 2 St. Marys, 4-0, to win its second consecutive District 9 Class 2A girls’ soccer title.

Winters scored a goal in each half and also assisted on Myleigh Hudson’s goal on her way to Allegheny Grille of Foxburg Player of the Game honors.

“We had a week off the week before and we were able to practice everyday,” Winters said, during the Cole Orthodontic Associates postgame interview. “We were really just preparing for this. We knew they were going to be a pretty good game. It was just a lot of hard work.”

The Bison led 1-0 at halftime on the strength of Winters’ goal 7:32 into the game on an assist from Mia Smith.

That score held until just over eight minutes into the second half, when Emily McCracken scored off a free kick to give Clearfield a 2-0 lead.

Clearfield scored twice more in the second half, with Winters notching her second goal with 12:15 to play and Myleigh Hudson scoring on an assist from Winters with eight minutes left.

“I think in the second half we started attack more as a team and we started looking for those outside through balls,” Winters said. “We just started passing it around and moving it better which ended up tiring them out and we were able to find the back of the net more.”

Mia Helsel got the shutout in net behind a strong effort the Clearfield defense.

With the win, Clearfield will face either Central or Bedford in the first round of the PIAA playoffs on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
