Warren Rallies Past Maplewood, Austin Knocks Off OV, Corry Tops Seneca (Sept. 27 VB Recaps)

GUYS MILLS, Pa. – In a showdown of two of the best volleyball teams in District 10, Warren rallied to beat Maplewood, 3-2 (9-25, 25-20, 19-25, 26-24, 15-10) at Maplewood.

The match changed in the fourth set when Warren rallied from a 20-17 deficit to take the set in extra points forcing the deciding fifth set.

            

A 7-2 run by the Dragons gave them a 24-22 lead with the lead initially taken on a block/kill by Kylie Fehlman.

But Maplewood scored two in a row to tie it at 24 before a Lindsay Madigan kill was followed by a Madison O’Hara hitting error for Maplewood to give Warren the 26-24 victory.

In the fifth set, Maplewood took an 8-7 lead on a Madison O’Hara ace only to watch Warren end the set on an 8-2 run that featured a 5-0 spurt to start with Fehlman recording a pair of kills.

Then, after Maplewood got back within three at 12-9, Maddy Jones took over with three kills to win the set and the match for the Dragons.

Jones had six of her 11 kills in the fifth set and also added nine digs and two aces.

                          

Fehlman led Warren with a match-high 21 kills to go with five blocks. She was named the Allegheny Grille of Foxburg Player of the Match and talked about the victory on the Cole Orthodontic Associates postgame interview.

Madelyn Nosel also helped the Dragon offense with eight kills which is also the number of kills Alexia Bowers had. Bowers added seven digs.

Summer Lucks was a stalwart on defense for the Class 3A Dragons with 33 digs and also added four set assists and two aces.

Madigan ran the offense for Warren with 40 set assists and contributed 14 digs, four aces, and two kills.

Maplewood, the reigning PIAA Class 1A champion, got 19 kills from Elizabeth Hunter who also added two blocks. Savannah O’Hara chipped in nine kills, while Bree Neely had 22 digs and five kills, and Lexy Potosky 20 digs.

Maggie Means ran the offense for the Tigers with 37 set assists and added 11 digs and seven kills.

Warren moved to 7-1 with the win while Maplewood fell to 8-2 with both losses coming to D10 3A powerhouses with the other being a 3-1 loss to Meadville.

CORRY 3, SENECA 0

CORRY, Pa. – Grace Allen had eight kills as Corry earned a 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-11) win over Seneca.

                        

With the win, Corry improved to 8-0.

Corry also raised over $6,000 for the Trooper Jacques “Jay” Rougeau Memorial Scholarship fund, a Corry native and former Pennsylvania State Trooper who was killed in the line of duty in June of this year.

Emmalee Carr and Aubrey Chase had five kills each for Corry, while Allison Sawyer and Sadye Dyne had four kills apiece.

For Seneca, Izzy Wisniewski had six kills and nine digs, while Ava Guzowski had seven set assists and seven digs.

AUSTIN 3, OSWAYO VALLEY 1

         

AUSTIN, Pa. – Marah Fowler had 26 set assists and three digs as Austin earned a 3-1 (15-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-22) win over Oswayo Valley.

Also for the Panthers, Ella Brewer had 28 digs, Isabella rees seven kills nine blocks and five aces and Savannah Horton nine kills and three aces.

Austin also had 13 combined aces.

CONNEAUT 3, SHARPSVILLE 0

LINESVILLE, Pa. – Payten Karastury had 39 set assists, 11 digs and three aces as Conneaut topped Sharpsville, 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-19.

Lainie Harrington led the CASH offense with 15 kills, while Paris Karastury had eight kills and 10 digs, Kenady Oates 15 digs and Ashlee Barabas 10 digs.

For Sharpsville, Emma Brest had eight digs, Brooklyn Ramsey five kills and eight digs and Ryleigh Fry 15 set assists.

PORT ALLEGANY 3, SMETHPORT 0

SMETHPORT, Pa. – Isla Lehmier had 24 set assists, two aces and two digs as Port Allegany beat Smethport, 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-20).

Ella Moses had seven kills, four blocks and three aces, while Jenna Renner had seven kills, three aces and six digs.

For Smethport, Elizabeth Hungiville had four aces, four kills, one block and six digs, while Emily Snyder had one ace, six kills, two blocks and one dig and Madi Faes had two aces, 12 set assists and one block and eight digs.

OTTO-ELDRED 3, NORTHERN POTTER 0

DUKE CENTER, Pa. – Kate Rhinehart had 12 kills, four aces, one block and 10 digs as Otto-Eldred earned a 3-0, 25-13, 25-17, 25-14.

Anna Schuessler had 30 set assists and one kill for O-E, while Addie Bell had seven aces and 14 digs.

For Northern Potter, Haylee Chapman had 15 digs and five kills, while Taylor Knowles had 13 digs and two kills and Rohan Slawson eight digs and three kills.
