ERIE, Pa. – Cathedral Prep’s baseball team had a flare for the dramatics in the postseason.

Andrew Costello’s 2-run home run started a 7-run rally in the sixth inning, breaking a 2-2 tie in what was a 9-2 win over Meadville in the District 10 Class 4A championship game.

Days later in the first round of the PIAA championships, Prep found itself trailing 5-3 against Montour, and again had some sixth-inning magic, as Cole Constable drilled a 3-run homer to rally the Ramblers to a 6-5 triumph.

Prep’s run ended in the PIAA quarterfinals against Hopewell, but no one can take away the fun ride they took in 2022, losing just two games – its regular season finale against McDowell being the other setback.

In the D10 title game, Costello, the YDL Sports Network Baseball Rookie of the Year, Costello was hit by a pitch in the at-bat in which he homered in the sixth, but the umpire ruled that he hadn’t made enough of an effort to get out of the way, so he stayed in the batters’ box.

“Honestly for me, it was just another opportunity,” Costello said. “I was feeling really confident in that situation and luckily I pulled it off.”

The following six Ramblers reached base safely after Costello’s home run. Three straight singles, a walk, a single, and a hit by pitch pushed the lead to 7-2. Nick Jackson grounded into a fielder’s choice, but two runs scored on the play for the final margin.

Andrew Malec pitched a clean seventh to close out the win. This was the ninth straight D10 baseball championship for Cathedral Prep.

In the PIAA first-round game, Prep found itself trailing for one of the only times all season.

Montour had scored five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to rally for a 5-3 advantage.

In the sixth, John Koshan reached on a fielder’s choice and Nick Jackson walked with two outs to set the stage for Constable’s dramatics.

“There was nothing but positivity,” Constable said about stepping into the box. “In my head I was thinking, ‘This isn’t the way I want to go out as a senior,’” Constable said. “I’ve been playing with some of these boys since I was five years old and I don’t want to do it with anyone else. I was looking to do something for the team right there and it happened.”
