WEST SUNBURY, Pa. – Slippery Rock held off a frantic Moniteau comeback attempt to win the inaugural Moniteau Holiday Tournament with a 47-45 win over the hosts.

The Rockets (6-3) led by 17, 40-23, late in the third quarter, by 16, 41-25, going to the fourth quarter, and by nine, 45-36, with a minute to play before watching Moniteau (4-4) have a chance to tie or win the game when Max Kovacik missed a pair of free throws with 3.7 seconds left.

But, despite getting the ball within the 3-point arc, the Warriors weren’t able to get a final shot off giving the tournament title to Slippery Rock.

Moniteau’s fourth-quarter comeback was fueled by the long ball with Chason Rugg and Andrew Zepeda each hitting a pair of 3-pointers.

Threes by Zepeda, Rugg, and Zepeda again in the first 3:21 of the fourth quarter closed the gap to 41-34, and a pair of Zepeda free throws with 4:09 left made it 31-36.

Anderson Franco stopped the bleeding for a moment for Slippery Rock with a leaning-away jumper with 2:44 to go, and a wild layup by Levi Prementine with 1:02 to play put the Rockets ahead, 45-36,

But Zepeda scored with 55.1 to go, and Rugg hit two free throws with 37.8 left to make it 45-40.

Zepeda then came away with a steal on the inbounds, and the ball ended up in the hands of Rugg, who buried another triple to make it 45-43 with 31.3 left.

Two free throws by Franco pushed the Slippery Rock lead back to four, 47-43, with 16.2 to play, but Zepeda scored again with 9.6 left to make it 47-45.

Out of timeouts, Moniteau was able to foul Kovacik with 3.7 to play, and Kovacik missed both.

But the Warriors made one too many passes after getting the rebound, and the clock ran out.

Josh Book led Slippery Rock with 18 points with Prementine adding 12 and Franco nine.
