Saturday’s District 10 PIAA First Round Hoops Previews

The PIAA basketball playoffs continue on Saturday with a number of District 10 teams in action.

Six girls’ teams and seven boys’ teams take the floor, looking to advance to the second round.

Here’s a look at each.

CLASS 4A GIRLS

(10-4) Conneaut (15-10) at (7-1) North Catholic (22-3), 3 p.m,.

                                      

How they got here: Conneaut beat Franklin 44-22 in the D10 quarterfinals, lost to Fairview 53-43 in the semifinals, and lost to Warren 47-37 in the third-place game. North Catholic beat Beaver 62-22 in the WPIAL quarterfinals, beat Highlands 63-45 in the semifinals, and beat Blackhawk 51-35 in the championship game.
Who the winner gets: (10-2) Harbor Creek/(7-3) Quaker Valley winner on Wednesday, March 15
Conneaut Leaders: Lainie Harrington 15.8 ppg., Hannah Brady 10.5 ppg.
North Catholic Leaders: Alyanna Rocco 16.0 ppg., Ava Walker, Anna Waskiewicz, Dacia Lewandowski
Notes: Conneaut is making its first PIAA playoff appearance. North Catholic has two Division I recruits in Rocco (Harvard) and Lewandowski (Akron)

(10-3) Warren (18-7) at (7-2) Blackhawk (21-4), 2 p.m.

How they got here: Warren beat Grove City 45-21 in D10 quarterfinals, lost to Harbor Creek 54-44 in the semifinals, and beat Conneaut 47-37 in the third-place game. Blackhawk beat Belle Vernon 63-45 in the WPIAL quarterfinals, beat Quaker Valley 51-40 in the semifinals, and lost to North Catholic 51-35 in the championship game
Who the winner gets: (9-1) Punxsutawney/(7-5) Knoch winner on Wednesday, March 15
Warren Leaders: Halle Kuzminski, Sammie Ruhlman, Alana Stuart, Alyssa Farr
Blackhawk Leaders: Alena Fusetti (18.0 ppg.), Kassie Potts, Haley Romigh, Piper Romigh.
Notes: Warren is making its fourth state playoff appearance in the last five seasons. Blackhawk is without the services of second-leading scorer Quinn Boronni who sustained a season-ending injury prior to the start of the playoffs.

(7-3) Quaker Valley (17-8) at (10-2) Harbor Creek (19-6), 2 p.m.

How they got here: Quaker Valley beat Knoch 52-39 in the WPIAL quarterfinals, lost to Blackhawk 51-40 in the semifinals, and beat Highlands 44-28 in the consolation round.

Quaker Valley Leaders: Oumou Thiero 12.5 ppg., Maria Helkowski 11.8 ppg., Nora Johns 10.7 ppg.
Harbor Creek Leaders: Brooke Przybylski 12.8 ppg., Sammie Zank 11.8 ppg.
Notes: Theiro’s father, Almamy played collegiately at Memphis and Duquesne and her brother Adou is a freshman on the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team. Harbor Creek is looking for its first PIAA playoff win since 2018.

                          

(7-6) Beaver Area (15-10) at (10-1) Fairview (19-6), 3 p.m.

How they got here: Beaver beat West Mifflin 58-42 in WPIAL first round, lost to North Catholic 62-22 in the quarterfinals, beat Elizabeth Forward 57-52, and lost to Knoch 42-29 in the consolation round
Who the winner gets: (6-1) Penn Cambria/(7-4) Highlands winner Wednesday, March 15
Beaver Leaders: Chloe List 14.3 ppg., Zoe Ringer 6.3 ppg.
Fairview Leaders: Hope Garrity 15.0 ppg., Bre Hedit 11.3 ppg., Sara Gennuso 7.9 ppg.
Notes: Seventeen of Fairview’s 19 wins this season have come by double-digits. Beaver began the season 8-1.

GIRLS 5A

(7-5) Trinity Area (18-7) at (10-1) Cathedral Prep (21-1), 4:30 p.m.

How they got here: Trinity beat Greater Latrobe 68-61 in WPIAL first round, lost to Woodland Hills 51-40 in the quarterfinals, and beat Penn-Trafford 62-59 in consolations.
Who the winner gets: (3-2) York Suburban/(7-6) Mars Area winner on Wednesday, March 15
Trinity Leaders: Eden Williamson, Maddy Roberts, Ruby Morgan
Cathedral Prep Leaders: Jayden McBride 17.1 ppg., Addie Biel 12.5 ppg., Lena Walz 12.2 ppg.
Notes: Cathedral Prep hasn’t lost a first-round PIAA playoff game since 2015. McBride has multiple Division I offers, including from Marquette and West Virginia.

(9-3) DuBois Central Catholic (14-12) vs. (10-1) Jamestown (5-17) at Mercer High School, 3 p.m.

How they got here: DCC beat Port Allegany, 54-30, in the D9 quarterfinals before losing to Otto-Eldred, 61-40, in the semifinals. The Lady Cardinals then beat North Clarion, 64-44, in the third-place game … Jamestown beat Commodore Perry, 53-21, to win the D10 title.

Who the winner gets: Winner of (6-1) Williamsburg/(7-4) St. Joseph game Wednesday, March 15

DCC Leaders: Kayley Risser (12.0 ppg), Faith Jacob (7.9 ppg), Lexi Berta (7.0 ppg)

Jamestown Leaders: Alayna Cadman (8.5 ppg), Taylor Keener (4.9 ppg), Savannah Thurber (4.7 ppg)

                                   

Notes: DCC played a killer of a schedule that included just five regular-season games against Class 1A opponents and 11 games (this will be No. 12) against PIAA qualifiers … Kayley Risser really stepped up her game in the second half of the season and is averaging 14.9 ppg over her last 15 games and the junior has 925 career points … The Lady Cardinals are in the PIAA playoffs for the second straight year losing as the D9 fifth-place team last year to WPIAL champion Bishop Canevin … Jamestown is one of just four District 10 Class 1A teams and none of them finished the regular season with more than four wins … The Muskies victories have gone against Commodore Perry (2 wins; 1 on the court, 1 forfeit) three times and winless Rocky Grove. They have been outscored 1,065 points to 562 on the season and the 51 points they scored in the D10 title game were the most they scored all season.

BOYS CLASS 2A

(10-3) Cambridge Springs (19-6) at (6-2) West Branch (19-8), 4 p.m.

How they got here: Cambridge Springs beat Lakeview 52-31 in D10 quarterfinals, lost to Erie First Christian 63-42 in the semifinals, and beat Eisenhower 59-43 in the third-place game. West Branch beat West Shamokin 66-38 in D6 quarterfinals, beat Southern Huntingdon 66-62 in semifinals, lost to United 70-42 in the championship game.
Who the winner gets: (7-1) Aliquippa/(9-3) Karns City winner on Wednesday, March 15
Cambridge Springs Leaders: Josh Reisenauer 16.7 ppg., Parker Schmidt 13.5 ppg., Ethan Counasse
West Branch Leaders: Owen Koleno 15.7 ppg., Joel Evans 13.4 ppg., Isaac Tiracorda 11.5 ppg.
Notes: Cambridge Springs fell to Ridgway in the first round of the PIAA playoffs last season, 47-44.

(6-3) Southern Huntingdon (20-5) at (10-2) Mercer (20-5), 4:30 p.m.

How they got here: Southern Huntingdon beat Northern Cambria 50-38 in D6 quarterfinals, lost to West Branch 66-62 in the semifinals, and beat Mount Union 67-50 in the third-place game. Mercer beat West Middlesex in the D10 quarterfinals 68-33, beat Eisenhower 61-53 in the semifinals, and lost to Erie First Christian, 49-44 in the title game.
Who the winner gets: (9-1) Clarion-Limestone/(10-4) Bishop Canevin winner on Wednesday, March 15
Southern Huntingdon Leaders: Lance Carbaugh, Nate Myers, Owen Winters
Mercer Leaders: Jake Mattocks 16.2 ppg., Daemyin Mattocks 11.1 ppg., Bubba Palmer 6.5 ppg.
Notes: Mercer’s loss to EFC snapped a 13-game winning streak. Southern Huntingdon is making its first-ever state playoff appearance. Myers is a 1,000-point scorer.

(7-6) Clairton (12-14 ) at (10-1) Erie First Christian (14-10), 3 p.m.

How they got here: Clairton beat Fort Cherry 53-46 in the first round of WPIAL playoffs, lost to Northgate 67-48 in quarterfinals, and beat Serra Catholic 68-59 in consolation. EFC beat Sharpsville 49-29 in the D10 quarterfinals, beat Cambridge Springs 63-42 in the semifinals, and beat Mercer 49-44 in the championship game.
Who the winner gets: (7-2) Northgate/(5-2) McConnellsburg winner on Wednesday, March 15
Clairton Leaders: Kaden Smith, Devon Dean, Taris Wooding
Erie First Christian Leaders: Jesse Jong 13.0 ppg., Avery Collins 12.5 ppg., Anthony Collins 12.0 ppg.
Notes: Erie First Christian won its first-ever District 10 title by beating Mercer. Clairton, the No. 14 seed in the WPIAL playoffs, stunned No. 3 Fort Cherry in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs to help earn its PIAA playoff bid.

BOYS CLASS 3A

(10-3) Seneca (13-12) at (7-1) Deer Lakes (17-8), 3:30 p.m.

How they got here: Seneca beat Girard 42-38 in the D10 quarterfinals, lost to Oil City 38-36 in the semifinals, and beat Fairview 58-44 in the third-place game. Deer Lakes beat Ellwood City 56-47 in WPIAL first round, beat 59-4 in the quarterfinals, beat Steel Valley 65-63 in the semifinals, and beat OLSH 61-60 in the championship.
Who the winner gets: (6-2) Bishop Guilfoyle/(4-3) Loyalsock Township winner on Wednesday, March 15
Seneca Leaders: Logan Kibbe 18.0 ppg., Lucas Rupp 13.2 ppg., Nolan Seabury
Deer Lakes Leaders: Bryce Robson 16.8 ppg., Billy Schaeffer 13.5 ppg, Wayne Love 13.0 ppg.
Notes: Seneca is seeking its first PIAA playoffs win after qualifying for the second year in a row. Deer Lakes won its first WPIAL title in program history.
(7-4) Neshannock at (10-2) Oil City
(7-4) Neshannock (18-7) at (10-2) Oil City (19-6), 3 p.m.

How they got here: Neshannock beat Keystone Oaks 56-43 in WPIAL first round, beat Yough 53-49 in the quarterfinals, lost to OLSH 53-50 in the semifinals, and lost to Steel Valley 87-64 in consolations. Oil City beat North East 68-37 in the D10 quarterfinals, beat Seneca 38-36 in the semifinals, and lost to Franklin 55-39 in the D10 title game.
Who the winner gets: (9-1) Brookville/(7-5) Seton-La Salle winner on Wednesday, March 15
Neshannock Leaders: Nate Rynd, Luciano DeLillo, Anthony Bonner
Oil City Leaders: Jake Hornbeck 14.0 ppg., Cam VanWormer 12.6 ppg., Sayyid Donald, Ethen Knox
Notes: Oil City is making its second-straight PIAA playoff appearance. Neshannock is averaging 69 points per game.

(7-6) Shady Side Academy (17-9) at (10-1) Franklin (21-4), 5 p.m.

How they got here: Shady Side Academy beat Brownsville 43-35 in WPIAL first round, lost to OLSH 53-42 in the quarterfinals, beat Yough 53-51, and lost to Seton-La Salle 62-44 in consolations. Franklin beat Mercyhurst Prep 71-68 (OT) in the D10 quarterfinals, beat Fairview 52-40 in the semifinals, and beat Oil City 55-39 in the title game.
Who the winner gets: (7-2) OLSH/(6-3) Westmont Hilltop winner on Wednesday, March 15
Shady Side Leaders: Nate Mallory, Ben Michaels, Seamus Riordan
Franklin Leaders: Damon Curry 16.5 ppg., Cole Buckley 10.9 ppg., Jalen Wood 9.3 ppg.
Notes: Franklin hasn’t lost since a late December buzzer-beater against Fairview. The Knights advanced to the PIAA quarterfinals in 2021 and lost to Ellwood City in the first round a year ago.

BOYS CLASS 6A

                                  

(10-1) Erie (16-9) at (7-2) New Castle (22-3), 3 p.m.

How they got here: Erie beat McDowell 47-45 in the D10 title game, beat Allderdice 62-58, and lost to State College 73-41 in subregional. New Castle beat Norwin 59-47 in the WPIAL quarterfinals, beat Mt. Lebanon 58-42 in the semifinals, and lost to Pittsburgh Central Catholic 61-52 in the title game.
Who the winner gets: (1-4) Downingtown West/(3-4) Waynesboro winner on Wednesday, March 15
Erie Leaders: Andreas McCullum, Jay Smith, Layveon Gore
New Castle Leaders: Isaiah Boice, Dajuan Young, Nick Wallace
Notes: New Castle was the WPIAL runner-up a year ago, but advanced all the way to the PIAA finals. Erie beat McDowell for the D10 title after falling to the Trojans in overtime a year ago and twice to them in this regular season.
