NEW YORK – Punxsutawney’s Mary Grusky, who just completed her freshman year of high school, won a national title in the javelin at the USA Track and Field Youth Outdoor Championships.
Grusky unleashed a throw of 42.76 meters (140 feet, 3 inches) to claim gold. The throw easily outdistanced runner-up finisher, Roselyn Vazquez, in the 15-16 division. Vazquez had a throw of 34.78 meters (114-1).
It was also a personal best for Grusky, who recorded a throw of 128-1 to take seventh at the PIAA Track and Field Championships last month. Her PR came in winning the District 9t title at 132-3, which is the Punxsutawney school record.
She is the daughter of Punxsutawney track and field coach Jason Grusky.
