Jan. 20, 2022 D10 Girls’ Hoops: Sharpsville Beats Redbank Valley; Garrity, Fairview Stay Perfect; Grove City Outlasts Hickory

SHARPSVILLE, Pa. – Sharpsville jumped out to an early double-digit lead and withstood a second-half comeback attempt from Redbank Valley in a 63-51 interdistrict win on Monday.

Redbank Valley, which trailed by as many as 18 in the second half, cut the margin to four with 30.2 seconds to go in the third quarter on an Alivia Huffman bucket. Sharpsville’s Chasie Fry responded with a three-point play to close the quarter.

The Bulldogs got within five in the fourth before an Alli Davis three spearheaded a 9-0 Sharpsville run that put the game out of reach.

Davis scored 15 points and was named the Allegheny Grille of Foxburg Player of the Game.

Sharpsville, which jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter and drained eight threes in the game, also got 18 points from Fry and 10 each from Ady Kratko and Breanna Hanley.

Redbank Valley, which was without a pair of key contributors in Madison Foringer and Claire Clouse, battled to get back in the game thanks to the strong play of Huffman, who finished with a team-high 15 points.

The Bulldogs trailed 36-20 at halftime, cutting the margin to seven, 46-39 at the end of the third quarter.

Mylee Harmon finished with 10 points and Caylen Rearick nine for Redbank, which suffered just its second loss of the season.

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS 49, COCHRANTON 32

COCHRANTON, Pa. – Cambridge Springs outscored Cochranton 17-3 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 49-32 Region 2 victory.

Hailee Rodgers scored six of her team-high 14 points in the fourth for the Blue Devils, while Finley Rauscher netted 12 points and Makenzie Yanc 11.

Cochranton was led by Jaylin McGill and Chelsey Freyermuth, who scored eight points apiece.

FAIRVIEW 63, CONNEAUT (OHIO) 23

FAIRVIEW, Pa. – Hope Garrity drained eight threes and scored 26 points – all in the first half, as Fairview powered past Conneaut (Ohio) 63-23 to remain unbeaten.

The Tigers, the lone remaining unbeaten girls team in District 10, led 44-11 at halftime, with Garrity scoring 17 points in the first quarter.

Caroline Zentis was also in double figures scoring for the Tigers with 12 points, while Bre Heidt netted nine.

                                   

Laney Pearson was in double figures for the Spartans, scoring a team-high 11 points.

GROVE CITY 49, HICKORY 45

HERMITAGE, Pa. – Delaney Callahan scored 15 points as Grove City earned a hard-fought 49-45 Region 5 win over Hickory.

The Eagles used a 22-point second quarter to take a 30-24 halftime lead in the back-and-forth affair.

Izzie Gamble was also in double figures for Grove City with 10 points, while Emma Santom had nine and Hannah Reiber seven.

In addition, Reiber had four assists and four steals, Callahan nine rebounds, three steals, and two assists, and Piper Como four assists and two steals.

Mariah Swanson scored 14 of her game-high 17 points in the second half for Hickory, one of three Hornets in double figures. Emily Duncan finished with 12 points and McKenzie Gustas 11.

CONNEAUT (Pa.) 44, OIL City 17

OIL CITY, Pa. – Jaelyn Blood scored 16 points as Conneaut earned a 44-17 Region 5 win over Oil City.

Rylee Jones tallied eight points for the Eagles, who led 25-8 at halftime, while Hannah Brady added eight points.

Maddy Marczak had 12 points to lead Oil City.

FARRELL 66, COMMODORE PERRY 13

FARRELL, Pa. – Sanaa Brodie led four Farrell players in double figures with 19 points as the Steelers earned a 66-13 Region 1 win over Commodore Perry.

The Steelers led 27-0 after the first quarter and 48-3 at halftime.

D’Eryah Stewart netted 11 points for the winners, while Cyncere Harden-Mann and Gabrielle King had 10 each.

                                  

Hailey Boozer had 11 points for Commodore Perry.

WEST MIDDLESEX 51, MERCER 15

MERCER, Pa. – Carlie Beatty scored 22 points to help West Middlesex to a 51-15 non-region win over Mercer.

Emily Anthony scored 16 points to go along with six assists and five steals for the Big Reds, who led 34-11 at halftime.

Caitlin Stephens pulled down 10 rebounds as well for West Middlesex.

Julia Balaski led Mercer with 10 points.

ERIE 28, MCDOWELL 27

ERIE, Pa. – Erie outscored McDowell 7-4 in the fourth quarter to pick up a key Region 6 victory, 28-27.

Arianna Mitchell and JyNazia Selby paced Erie in the defensive battle with eight points each.

Caylen Spano led all scorers for McDowell with 11 points, while Amaiya Nelson netted seven.

FRANKLIN 50, MEADVILLE 22

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Camdon Bashor had a monster double-double with 20 points and 20 rebounds as Franklin muscled past Meadville in a Region 5 battle, 50-22.

Lauren Billingsley had 15 points and six rebounds for the Lady Knights, who led 34-6 at halftime on their way to the win.

Marlaya McCoy paced Meadville with eight points.

VILLA MARIA 70, CORRY 13

ERIE, Pa. – Carissa Dunham scored 12 points as 10 different Villa players made their way into the scoring column in a 70-13 Region 6 win over Corry.

Jayden McBride scored 10 points and Daniela Shaughnessy eight for the Victors, who led 39-2 at halftime.

Miranda Nickerson and Rachel Brady had four points each for Corry.

BEAVER FALLS 48, SHARON 40

SHARON, Pa. – J’La Kizart led three Beaver Falls players in double figures with 15 points in a 48-40 win over Sharon.

Beaver Falls led 39-25 after three quarters.

India McGee led Sharon with 10 points, while Tay Chester and Ella Connelly had nine each.
