Handzel Nets Second Overtime Winner of State Playoffs, Sends Prep Boys to PIAA 3A Title Game

Cathedral Prep's Noah Handzel (7).

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – For the second time in the PIAA playoffs, Noah Handzel played the role of hero.

Handzel’s goal off a corner kick in overtime sent the Ramblers past previously unbeaten Hershey (22-1), 1-0, and into the Class 3A state championship game.

Dylan Danch corralled the corner ball in the box and placed a pass to Handzel, who drilled it into the back of the net.

Handzel also had the game-winning goal in a 2-1 first round win over Montour.

The defense was once again excellent for the Ramblers (18-3-1), with Tyler Chermack notching his second consecutive shutout in net.

The win also avenges a 2-0 loss to Hershey in the semifinals last year for the Ramblers.

With the win, Prep advances to play Springfield Township, a 3-2 winner in penalty kicks over Radnor, in the state title game on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Mechanicsburg.
