Extra Effort: Clearfield Girls Outlast Bedford in Penalty Kicks to Move on to PIAA Class 2A Quarterfinals

   

HYDE, Pa. – In the end, Clearfield found the back of the net one more time than Bedford.

After 100 minutes of action, the Lady Bison outlasted District 5 champion Bedford 6-5 in penalty kicks to earn a 2-1 win in the first round of the PIAA Class 2A championships.

Mia Smith had the lone goal of the game in regulation for Clearfield, scoring in the second half.

Mia Helsel had several big stops in net to help Clearfield to the victory.

With the win, Clearfield advances to play WPIAL champion Avonworth, a 3-1 winner over D10 runner-up and defending PIAA runner-up General McLane in the PIAA quarterfinals on Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

            

It’s the second consecutive season the Lady Bison have advanced to the PIAA quarterfinals.

SPRINGDALE 4, SENECA 0

WATTSBURG, Pa. – The historic season for the Seneca girls’ soccer team came to an end with a 4-0 loss to Springdale in the first round of the PIAA Class 1A championships.

It was the Briana Ross show for Springdale, who scored all four goals in the win, including three in the first half.

FREEDOM 3, MERCER 1

                          

FREEDOM, Pa. – Shaye Bailey scored two goals to help send Freedom to a 3-1 win over Mercer in the first round of the PIAA Class 1A championships.

Mackenzie Mohrbacher had the insurance goal for Freedom.

Mercer actually scored first in the first half courtesy of Morgan Miller.

With the win, Freedom advances to play Bishop Guilfoyle in the quarterfinals.

AVONWORTH 3, GENERAL MCLANE 1

PITTSBURGH – Gianna Babusci and Fiona Martin scored in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and send Avonworth to a 3-1 win over General McLane in the first round of the PIAA Class 2A championships.

Remy Suroviec scored in the first half for GM, while Emma Lutzer did likewise for Avonworth to tie the game.

SOUTH PARK 2, FORT LEBOEUF 1

WATERFORD, Pa. – Emily Mihelcic and Alicia Riberich scored to send South Park to a 2-1 win over Fort LeBoeuf in the first round of the PIAA Class 2A championships.

Emily Samluk scored for Fort LeBoeuf.

                        

South Park advances to play Shady Side Academy in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

MARS 4, WARREN 0

WARREN, Pa. – Addi Girdwood had two goals and two assists to send Mars to a 4-0 win over Warren in the first round of the PIAA Class 3A girls’ soccer championships.

Ainsley Ray and Rosie Pellegrino also found the back of the net for the Fighting Planets.

Mars advances to play Montour on Saturday in the quarterfinals.

         

BISHOP GUILFOYLE 2, KARNS CITY 0

KARNS CITY, Pa. – Hailey DeGol’s first half goal proved to be all Bishop Guilfoyle needed in a 2-0 win over District 9 champion Karns City in the first round of the PIAA Class 1A championships.

Nicole Hawk also found the back of the net for BG.

BG advances to play Freedom in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
