District 10 Hoops Teams set to Begin PIAA Playoff Journey

After nearly a week layoff since districts and subregional play, its time for the PIAA playoffs to begin.

Five District 10 boys teams and seven girls teams are in action.

Here’s a look at each game.

CLASS 1A BOYS

(10-2) Kennedy Catholic (20-5) at (7-2) Union-New Castle (22-3), 7 p.m.

                                      

How they got here: Kennedy Catholic beat Jamestown, 44-27 in the D10 semifinals, and lost to Farrell, 59-40 in the D10 title game. Union beat Aquinas Academy 100-47 in the WPIAL quarterfinals, beat Carlynton 80-58 in the semifinals, and lost to Imani Christian 64-41 in the championship game.
Who the winner gets: Winner of (6-1) Portage/(9-4) Cameron County game on Tuesday, March 14.
Kennedy Catholic Leaders: Thorsten Hart 10.8 ppg., Remington Hart 8.1 ppg., Levi Hailstock 6.9 ppg.
Union Leaders: Matthew Stanley 15.9 ppg., Peyton Lombardo 10.0 ppg., Lucas Stanley 8.4 ppg.
Notes:

(7-4) Geibel Catholic (17-8) at (10-1) Farrell (20-4), 7 p.m.

How they got here: Geibel Catholic beat Avealla 70-33 and Neighborhood Academy 66-64 in the WPIAL quarterfinals before falling to Imani Christian, 75-57 in the semifinals, and Carlynton, 77-37 in the consolation game Farrell beat Rocky Grove 64-55 in the D10 semis and Kennedy Catholic 59-40 in the D10 title game.

Notes: This is a rematch from last season’s PIAA first-round game, won by Farrell, 67-55. Farrell has won 10 straight games. Geibel Catholic has rallied from a 2-6 start, going 15-2 since then

CLASS 4A BOYS

(7-5) Hampton (22-3) at (10-1) Grove City (16-9), 7 p.m.

                          

How they got here: Hampton beat Blackhawk 65-50 in WPAIL first round, lost to Highland 58-41 in the quarterfinals, beat South Allegheny 55-50, and Uniontown 58-47 in consolations. Grove City beat Corry 58-41 in the D10 quarterfinals, Harbor Creek 57-43 in the semis, and Hickory 47-40 in the title game.
Who the winner gets: (9-1) Clearfield/(7-3) Laurel Highlands on Tuesday, March 14.
Hampton Leaders: Peter Kramer 20.0 ppg., Eric Weeks 15.8 ppg., Liam Migogna 14.7 ppg.
Grove City Leaders: Nathan Greer 15.4 ppg., Brett Loughry 13.9 ppg., Gavin Lutz 11.4 ppg.
Notes: This is Grove City’s first PIAA appearance since 2020. The Eagles won their first D10 title since 1999. Hampton is in the state playoffs for the second-straight season after qualifying in 5A a year ago.

(10-2) Hickory (15-9) at (7-2) North Catholic (19-7), 7 p.m.

How they got here: Hickory beat General McLane 61-54 in the D10 quarterfinals, knocked off top seed Warren 51-44 in the semifinals, and lost to Grove City 47-40 in the D10 title game. North Catholic beat Montour 53-41 in WPIAL first round, Uniontown 73-58 in the quarterfinals, and Laurel Highland 74-59 in the semifinals before falling to Lincoln Park, 78-68 in the title game.
Who the winner gets: (2-2) Valley View/(4-3) Shamokin Area on Tuesday, March 14
Hickory Leaders: Aidan Enoch 10.7 ppg., Tyson Djakovich 10.1 ppg., Rylan Dye 10.0 ppg.
North Catholic Leaders: Max Hurray 21.6 ppg., Andrew Maddalon 19.4 ppg., Matt Ellery 15.2 ppg.
Notes: Hickory is 6-3 in its last nine games and is returning to the state playoffs after falling to Quaker Valley 67-51 in the opening round last season. The Hornets advanced to the state title game in 2021. North Catholic is 15-2 in its last 17 games and is averaging over 70 ppg.

CLASS 5A BOYS

(7-5) South Fayette (16-10) at (10-1) Cathedral Prep (21-3), 7:30 p.m. at Hagerty Family Events Center, Erie

How they got here: South Fayette beat Shaler 34-33 in WPIAL first round, lost to Peters Township 68-60 in the quarterfinals, and beat McKeesport 68-55 and Mars 56-36 in the consolation bracket. Cathedral Prep beat Meadville 58-42 for the D10 title and DuBois 40-32 in the subregional title game.

South Fayette: Elijah Hill 21.2 ppg.,
Cathedral Prep Leaders: Jake Sambuchino 14.1 ppg., Amaree Pickens 11.5 ppg., Zion Barksdale, Semontae Lofton
Notes: Cathedral Prep beat Meadville for the third time in the D10 title game and rallied to beat DuBois after trailing by as many as eight.

CLASS 2A GIRLS
(10-3) Lakeview (16-9) at (9-2) Moniteau (19-7), 7 p.m.

How they got here: Lakeview beat Union City, 50-21, in the District 10 quarterfinals before losing to eventual champion Kennedy Catholic, 61-29, in the semifinals. The Sailors then beat Cambridge Springs, 36-33, to claim the third and final PIAA playoff berth awarded to District 10 in 2A … Moniteau beat Coudersport, 50-38, in the D9 semifinals before losing to Redbank Valley, 61-35, in the championship game.
Who the winner gets: Winner of (6-4) Marion Center/(7-1) Shenango game Tuesday, March 14
Lakeview Leaders: Kyndra Seddon (16 points in the quarterfinal win & 11 in the third-place game), Emma Masteller (Scored 12 points in the quarterfinal win & 9 in the third-place game), Alaina Peterson (Scored 8 points in the third-place game)
Moniteau Leaders: Catherine Kelly (15.2 ppg), Kendall Sankey (7.2 ppg), Davina Pry (7.2 ppg), Allie Pry (6.9 ppg)
Notes: Lakeview advanced to the second round of the PIAA 3A playoffs last year … Moniteau is in the PIAA playoffs for the first time since 2016 … Of the Lady Warriors’ seven losses, four are to D9 2A champion Redbank Valley … The teams have a common opponent in Mercer. Lakeview split with Mercer winning 54-31 Dec. 19 and losing 31-29 Jan. 29 … Moniteau lost to Mercer 37-32 Dec. 30.

(7-4) Aliquippa (16-10) at (10-2) Maplewood (20-5), 7 p.m.

How they got here: Aliquippa beat Washington 45-39 in WPIAL first round, and Serra Catholic 60-56 in the quarterfinals before falling to Freedom Area 47-44 in the semifinals. Maplewood beat Mercer 50-37 in the D10 quarterfinals, and Cambridge Springs 36-33 in the semifinals before falling to Kennedy Catholic in the title game, 75-33.
Who the winner gets: (5-1) Windber/(7-5) Greensburg Central Catholic winner on Tuesday, March 14.
Aliquippa Leaders: Auntesty Johnson (23 points in a quarterfinal win), and Angel Henry (20 points in a quarterfinal win.
Maplewood Leaders: Sadie Thomas 12.1 ppg., Bailey Varndell 8.1 ppg., Savannah O’Hara 6.4 ppg.
Notes: Aliquippa made a Cinderella run as the No. 11 seed in the WPIAL playoffs to qualify for the state tournament. Maplewood beat Cambridge Springs for the third time this season, an overtime victory in the D10 semifinals, and held a second-quarter lead over Kennedy Catholic in the title game before a big Golden Eagles run.

                                   

(7-7) Brentwood (14-11) at (10-1) Kennedy Catholic (21-4), 7 p.m.

How they got here: Brentwood beat Clairton 49-43 to open the WPIAL playoffs before falling to Shenango, 43-39 in the quarterfinals. Kennedy Catholic beat Eisenhower 85-16 in the D10 first round, Lakeview 61-29 in the semifinals, and Maplewood 75-33 in the title game after trailing early, 15-11.
Who the winner gets: (6-2) United/(7-3) Burgettstown winner on Tuesday, March 14
Brentwood Leaders: Bobbie Wardinznski, Brianna Folina, Jenna Yee, Mia March
Kennedy Catholic Leaders: Layke Fields 19.2 ppg., Bella Magestro 12.0 ppg., Izzy Bianco 9.8 ppg., Monique Vincent 8.6 ppg., Hayden Keith 7.0 ppg.
Notes: Kennedy Catholic won its 13th straight District 10 title by beating Maplewood. The Golden Eagles enter the playoffs on an 18-game winning streak. They are looking to make a run back to Hershey after advancing to the PIAA 1A title game a year ago.

CLASS 3A GIRLS

(10-3) Sharpsville (14-11) at (7-2) Laurel (23-3), 7 p.m.

How they got here: Sharpsville beat Northwestern 37-30 in the D10 quarterfinals, lost to Mercyhurst Prep 50-33 in the semifinals, and beat Greenville 42-34 in the third-place game. Laurel beat Burrell 64-36 in the first round, Keystone Oaks 45-44 in the quarterfinals, and Neshannock 66-46 in the semifinals before falling to Avonworth 48-40 in the title game.
Who the winner gets: (6-1) River Valley/(3-4) York Catholic winner on Tuesday, March 14.
Sharpsville Leaders: Chasie Fry 12.1 ppg., Tori Kimpan 8.8 ppg., Lily Palko 8.8 ppg., Breanna Hanley 5.9 ppg.
Laurel Leaders: Regan Atkins 15.0 ppg., Johnna Hill, Joselynn Fortuna, Danielle Pontius
Notes: The two teams met back on Dec. 17, a 50-37 Laurel win. Sharpsville has won eight of its last nine games. Laurel won the WPIAL section I title. Laurel advanced to the second round of the PIAA playoffs last season, beating Redbank Valley 49-44 before falling to Forest Hills, 65-46.

(7-5) OLSH (19-7) at (10-2) Wilmington (21-4), 7 p.m.

How they got here: OLSH beat Mt. Pleasant 53-38 in WPIAL first round before falling to eventual WPIAL champion Avonworth, 43-25, beating Waynesburg Central 41-27 and Keystone Oaks 69-41 in WPIAL consolations. Wilmington beat Seneca 45-29 in the D10 quarterfinals and Greenville 52-39 in the semifinals before falling to Mercyhurst Prep in the title game, 48-33.
Who the winner gets: (7-1) Avonworth/(6-3) Forest Hills winner on Tuesday, March 14.
OLSH Leaders: Emma Ficorilli, Kyleigh Nagy, Mia Grisafi.
Wilmington Leaders: Lia Krarup 20.2 ppg., Reese Bruckner 6.2 ppg., Annalee Garder 5.6 ppg., Sarah Dieter 5.4 ppg.
Notes: Wilmington is searching for its first PIAA playoff win in program history and had won eight straight games before the title game loss to Mercyhurst Prep. Nagy scored 20 points and Ficorilli 14 in their WPIAL first-round win.

(7-7) Waynesburg Central (21-5) at (10-1) Mercyhurst Prep (19-5) at Hagerty Family Events Center, 6 p.m.

How they got here: Waynesburg Central beat Seton-La Salle 64-55 in WPIAL first round before rallying to eventual champion Shady Side Academy, 49-19. Mercyhurst Prep beat Sharpsville 50-33 in the D10 semifinals and Wilmington 48-33 in the D10 title game.
Who the winner gets: (9-1) Karns City/(7-3) Shady Side Academy Winner
Waynesburg Central Leaders: Kaley Rohanna 17.5 ppg., Josie Horne 9.3 ppg., Addison Blair 7.8 ppg.
Mercyhurst Prep Leaders: Olivia Kulyk 19.2 ppg., Lillirose Lang 10.2 ppg., Mia Mangini
Notes: Mercyhurst Prep is looking for its first PIAA playoff win since a first-round victory over Seton-La Salle in 2020. The Lakers enter the PIAA playoffs on an 11-game winning streak.

CLASS 6A GIRLS

(10-1) McDowell (19-6) at (7-2) Upper St. Clair (21-3), 6 p.m.

How they got here: McDowell beat Erie 51-40 in the D10 title game, Allderdice 60-26 in the subregional, and lost to Altoona 41-39 in OT in the subregional final. Upper St. Clair beat Peters Township 60-43 in the quarterfinals, beat Mt. Lebanon 58-33 in the semifinals, and lost to North Allegheny 71-45 in the title game.
