Base: Clarion Scores Late Again this time to Beat Punxsy; Grove City Tops Hickory

Noah Harrison had a pair of hits in Clarion's win over Punxsutawney Monday

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – In a matchup of two of the top teams in the state, Clarion scored all of its runs from the fifth inning forward to pick up an 8-2 road win over Punxsutawney.

Down 2-0 entering the fifth, the Bobcats erupted for five runs in the fifth then added a solo run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Just like on Saturday when Clarion did its damage against St. Marys with two outs, it was again a two-out rally in the fifth that led to all five runs.

An error on a ball hit by Dawson Smail tied the game at two and then Bryce Brinkley gave the Bobcats the lead before a two-run double by Noah Harrison capped off the inning.

                  

Harrison was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs for the defending PIAA Class 1A champions.

Dawson Smail got the win in relief of Devon Lauer going three scoreless innings allowing a hit while striking out two.

Lauer pitched four innings giving up two earned runs on four hits and a hit batter while striking out three.

Punxsutawney, a PIAA Class 3A semifinalist a year ago, scored twice in the first with Coy Martino picking up an RBI.

Maddox Hetrick led the Chucks going 3-for-3 with a run scored.

                          

Martino suffered the loss going five innings allowing just two hits and striking out nine. He was charged with five unearned runs. He did walk two and hit two. Nevin Day then gave up three runs, one earned, on five hits and a walk while striking out three in two innings of work.

GROVE CITY 9, HICKORY 5

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City scored four runs in the first inning and five in the fifth to earn a 9-5 win over visiting Hickory.

Joey Hathaway was 1-for-4 with three RBIs for Grove City, while Ethan Orr was 2-for-2 with two doubles and an RBI, Ben Fischer was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Nolan Renick went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Kam Martin was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Martin got the win, allowing two runs (one earned) in two innings. He allowed one hit, striking out two and walking four.

               

Joey Cidilia was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIS for Hickory.

Tyler Boyle took the loss, allowing four runs in ⅓ of an inning, on three hits and one walk.

BROOKVILLE 11, BROCKWAY 9

BROCKWAY, Pa. – Building a nine-run lead after 4 ½ innings, visiting Brookville held off Brockway for an 11-9 victory.

The Raiders scored multiple runs in four of the first five innings while scoring in each of those innings to gain an 11-2 lead before Brockway picked up a run in the fifth and six more in the sixth to make it a close game.

The Rovers then had the tying run on in the seventh before Brookville’s Sergio Sotillo induced a double-play ball to earn the save.

Pierson Ruhlman got the win for the Raiders going five innings allowing seven earned runs on six hits, four walks, and three hits batters while striking out two.

After Luke Burton got tagged for a couple of runs in a ⅓ of an inning, Sotillo pitched 1 ⅔ scoreless walking two and striking out three.

Owen Fleming hit a home run and a double for Brookville while going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

            

Jack Pete tripled for the Raiders and was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Burton added a double going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Ladd Blake drove in three runs in the win and was 2-for-4, while Kai Kaltenbach and Ruhlman each added a pair of RBIs with Kaltenbach going 2-for-5 with a run scored and Ruhlman going 1-for-4 with a walk.

Dylan Bash drove home four runs for Brockway while going 2-for-4 while Caleb Daugherty was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Chad Young took the loss going 3 ⅔ innings allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits, three walks, and a hit batter while striking out four.

strong>GREENVILLE 10, MERCER 0, 5 innings

GREENVILLE, Pa. – Jackson Leskovac was 2-for-3 with three RBIs as Greenville beat Mercer, 10-0 in five innings.

The Trojans scored two runs in the first inning, three in the third, and four in the fifth.

Jake Csonka was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Nick Solderich, Noah Philson, and Bennett Hayne all drove in one run each.

Philson got the win, going four innings and allowing three hits, striking out eight and walking six.

CAMERON COUNTY 10, SMETHPORT 5

EMPORIUM, Pa. – Scoring 10 runs in the first four innings, Cameron County beat visiting Smethport, 10-5.

Jake Narby and Maddox Baughman each drove in a pair of runs for the Red Raiders with Narby going 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored and Baughman going 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

Taylon Tucket also had a pair of hits in the game going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored for Cameron County.

Cole Szuba went 1-for-2 with two walks, a run scored, and an RBI for Smethport, while Owen Rounsville scored twice while going 1-for-2 with two walks.

Ryan Shaffer got the win going four innings allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two.

McDowell took the loss going three innings allowing seven runs, six earned, on six hits and seven walks while striking out five.
