GROVE CITY, Pa. – Back-to-back with an exclamation point.

The Grove City Eagles football team won its second consecutive District 10 Class 3A football title in 2022, much in the same fashion that they did the year before – with a win over rival Slippery Rock.

The Eagles scored five-straight touchdowns, erasing what was a 10-point second-quarter deficit en route to a 42-23 win.

Gavin Lutz’s 61-yard punt return for a touchdown with 38 seconds to play in the first half gave the top-seeded Eagles a 21-17 halftime lead.

That was quite the turnaround from about 10 minutes earlier when sixth-seeded Slippery Rock appeared to be in control of the game going up 17-7 on a 33-yard Maddox Allen touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter.

The Eagles got through a loaded Class 3A field to win the D10 crown, rallying for a dramatic 22-21 semifinal win over Sharon after earning a hard-fought 35-21 win over Fairview in the quarterfinals.

With the halftime lead, Grove City poured it on in the second half thanks to a pair of Hunter Hohman touchdown runs and a defensive touchdown to go ahead 42-17 with just over nine minutes to play.

The teams’ stat lines were remarkably similar with Slippery Rock actually outgaining Grove City 324 to 301 including 193 to 156 on the ground. The Rockets ran 53 plays and had the ball for 24:24 compared to Grove City’s 50 plays and 23:36 off the clock.

The D10 title was the fourth in program history for the Eagles.
