Spring Sports Season 2024 Practice Underway

State champion Clarion practices Monday. From right to left: Derek Smail, Noah Harrison, and Dawson Smail

CLARION, Pa. – It felt like spring and it sounded like spring at Paul A. Weaver Park in Clarion, as the defending PIAA Class 1A baseball champion Clarion Bobcats were able to start practice outside on the grass and in the cages Monday afternoon.

The familiar ping of the bat rang true, and manager Rob Jewett, who has guided a pair of teams to the state title game including last year’s squad which beat rival DuBois Central Catholic for the title, put his team through some infield practice as well.

Those sights and sounds were hard all over District 9 and District 10 Monday, as it was the first official practice day for spring sports.

Of course, winter sports are still going on for many teams around the area with basketball just entering the PIAA playoff portion of its season and wrestling and swimming and diving getting set for its championships.

But there is nothing like the coming of spring and a warm, sunny day to lift the spirits after a dreary and cold – if not snow-filled – winter.

And it is shaping up to be another fantastic season around northwestern Pennsylvania with plenty of track and field athletes looking to once again contend for state medals, and a handful of baseball and softball teams that know, if the ball bounces the right way, that they have a shot at a state title of their own in mid-June in State College.

Stayed tuned for all the exciting spring sports season action right here on the YDL Sports Network where we will have scores, recaps, and broadcasts coming to you sooner than anyone can imagine right now.
