Region Contenders Begin to Emerge in Week 4 in District 10

It’s Week for of the high school football season, which means that almost everyone is into the grind of region play in District 10.

Early contenders have emerged, with Cambridge Springs (Region 1), Mercyhurst Prep (Region 2), Sharon (Region 3), Sharpsville (Region 3), Farrell (Region 3) and Fort LeBoeuf (Region 5) boasting 3-0 records heading into Week 4.

Will any of them fall? What other contenders will emerge as the season progresses? Here’s a look into the Week 4 action.

REGION 1

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS (3-0) at REYNOLDS (2-1)

            

The Blue Devils have looked every bit the part of a Class 1A title contender through three weeks, outscoring Kennedy Catholic, Eisenhower and Maplewood by a combined score of 152-24. Morgan Applebee is a more than capable passer, but hasn’t had to put the ball in the air that much, as the Blue Devils have rushed for over 1,000 yards collectively through three games. Leading the way are Brett Kania (420 yards, 7 touchdowns), Josh Gorton (204 yards, 3 touchdowns) and Jordan Washington (194 yards, 2 touchdowns).

After a 2-0 start to the season, Reynolds is looking to bounce back from a 62-20 loss to Sharpsville last week. Gabe Minjarez has rushed for 292 yards and four touchdowns for the Raiders, while Gavin Alabran has rushed for 142 yards and two scores and thrown for 234 yards and a touchdown.

COCHRANTON (1-1) at KENNEDY CATHOLIC (0-3)

Cochranton looked good after its week off, blanking Saegertown, 45-0. The Cardinals were paced by Noah Cummings, who ran for over 100 yards and a pair of scores in the win.

Kennedy Catholic, meanwhile, is back in action after canceling its game with Lakeview last week due to low numbers. Rayvion Wilbon-Venable has rushed for 207 yards and a pair of scores, while also throwing for throwing for 423 yards and six scores.

                          

MAPLEWOOD (1-2) at LAKEVIEW (3-0)

Lakeview is anxious to return to the field after receiving a forfeit win over Kennedy Catholic last week. The Sailors put up 98 points in wins over Seneca and Saegertown. Mitchell Tingley has rushed for 359 yards and five touchdowns, while Leyton Zacherl has rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns and thrown for 139 yards and three more scores.

Maplewood looks to get its offense on track after scoring just 19 points in the first three weeks. Dorian Dubot leads the Tigers with 103 yards on the ground.

SAEGERTOWN (1-2) at MERCER (1-2)

Mercer looks to bounce back from a tough 48-14 loss to Wilmington, as is Saegertown, which was blanked by Cochranton last week. Daemyin Mattocks has rushed for 291 yards and seven touchdowns to lead the Mustangs’ offense.

Luke Young has rushed for 103 yards and thrown for 109, while Reese Wilkinson has a pair of rushing touchdowns.

REGION 2

EISENHOWER (2-1) at SENECA (0-3)

Eisenhower bounced back after a Week 2 loss to Cambridge Springs with a 34-13 win over Union City. The Shawn Pascuzi to Kris Bunk connection has been big for the Knights so far. Pascuzzi has thrown for 281 yards and five touchdowns, all of which have gone to Bunk, who has 190 yards receiving. Pascuzzi also leads the team with 203 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while Tucker Lindell also had three rushing touchdowns.

Seneca is in search of its first win after losses to Lakeview, Conneaut and Mercyhurst Prep. Nolan Seabury has thrown for 252 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for 194 yards and four scores.

                        

IROQUOIS (1-2) at UNION CITY (1-2)

Iroquois is riding high after snapping a 17-game losing streak with a 13-7 win over Northwestern last week  keyed by a late Savion Peoples touchdown run. Union City, meanwhile, is looking to bounce back after a 34-13 loss to Eisenhower last week. Skylar Olmstead, Austin Brown and Owen Kerns have combined for 579 yards rushing and nine touchdowns for the Bears.

MERCYHURST PREP (3-0) at NORTHWESTERN (0-3)

Mercyhurst Prep has outscored Fairview, Slippery Rock and Seneca by a combined score of 148-27. The Lakers feature a three-headed monster on offense with Paul Johnson, JJ Ganska and Ja’son Ellman. Johnson has throw for 541 yards and six touchdowns and also rushed for 233 yards and four touchdowns. Ganska has amassed 429 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, while Ellman has 255 yards receiving and six total touchdowns.

Northwestern, meanwhile, is looking to get its offense on track. Lloyd Fountain will lead the charge. Fountain has 535 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns and has also rushed for 74 yards.

REGION 3

GREENVILLE (0-3) at FARRELL (3-0)

Farrell has three impressive wins over North East, Warren Harding and Grove City. The Steelers have a plethora of weapons at their disposal. Senior quarterback Kabron Smith has thrown for 523 yards and six touchdowns, while Juelz Johnson has 225 yards rushing and three scores. Smith’s top targets are Danny Odem (145 yards, 2 touchdowns), Simeir Wade (178 yards, 1 touchdowns) and Brandon Chambers (85 yards, 2 touchdowns).

Greenville’s last two games have been one-possession losses to Wilmington and Slippery Rock. Nick Solderich has thrown for 242 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for two more touchdowns and 88 yards. Malachi Hyde leads the team with 181 rushing yards.

SHARON (3-0) at GROVE CITY (1-2)

         

Sharon’s defense has been perfect so far this season. The Tigers have yet to allow a point in wins over Neshannock, Warren and Hickory. Offensively, Sharon is led by a balanced rushing attack that includes Cortez Nixon (232 yards), Mister Ham (229 yards, 3 touchdowns) and Ike Friday (107 yards, 1 touchdown). Ham has also thrown for 274 yards and four touchdowns, with two of those going to CC Harrison (125 yards receiving).

Grove City is looking to follow a similar path as last season, when they started at 1-2 with losses to Avonworth and Farrell before winning the D10 title. Hunter Hohman can do it all. The senior quarterback has rushed for 210 yards and three touchdowns and thrown for 439 yards and six touchdowns. Gavin Lutz (190 yards, 4 touchdowns) and Nathan Greer (182 yards, 2 touchdowns) lead a talented receiving core.

HICKORY (2-1) at WILMINGTON (2-1)

Hickory’s offense looks to get back on track following a 12-0 loss to Sharon last week. Defensively, the Hornets have given up just 33 points in three games. Offensively, Zander Telesz has thrown for 419 yards and six touchdowns, with Tylon Cousin (103 yard, 3 touchdowns) leading the receivers. Kelvin Morrison, meanwhile, has rushed for 189 yards and three scores.

Wilmington is coming off back-to-back wins over Greenville and Mercer. Ben Miller has rushed for 488 yards and seven touchdowns. Buddah Book has thrown for 131 yards, with 56 of those going to Miller.

SLIPPERY ROCK (1-2) at SHARPSVILLE (3-0)

The Caullin Summer machine goes to West Middlesex this week, where the Blue Devils will host Slippery Rock. Summers’ numbers are gaudy. The senior has thrown for 1,009 yards and 16 touchdowns while rushing for 382 yards and four more scores. Dalton Byerly (438 yards, 3 touchdowns) and Jaiden White (172 yards, 3 touchdowns) lead the receiving group. The Sharpsville offense has scored 182 points in three games.

Slippery Rock got its first win of the season over Greenville last week, 14-7, thanks to the heroics of Sam Schwartz. Schwartz has 151 yards receiving and three touchdowns from quarterback Eli Anderson, who has thrown for 400 yards and three touchdowns.

REGION 4

CONNEAUT (1-2) at WARREN (0-3)

A pair of teams that are looking to get their offenses going, with Conneaut falling to Harbor Creek last week, 42-0, while Warren fell to Girard, 49-13. When Conneaut is going good, it’s through the run game. Joe Furgiuele rushed for 199 yards and three touchdowns in a Week 2 win over Seneca.

Eric Dippold has thrown for 229 yards and a score for Warren, while Sam Harvey has 175 yards on the ground.

OIL CITY (2-1) at FRANKLIN (0-3)

Oil City was shut out last week by North East without star running back Ethen Knox. In lopsided wins over Warren and Corry, Knox rushed for a combined 584 yards nine touchdowns.

The Route 8 rivalry also sees a Franklin team that is in search of its first win since the 2021 season. Cole Buckley has 320 yards receiving and a touchdown for the Knights, the top target of quarterback Jason Carey (360 yards passing).

MEADVILLE (2-1) at TITUSVILLE (1-2)

Meadville bounced back from a 1-point loss to Butler with a 55-17 victory over Fairview. As usual, the Bulldogs are getting it done on the ground. Braidyn Miller has rushed for 383 yards and five touchdowns, while Brighton Anderson has 321 yards on the ground and four scores.

Titusville hung tough against unbeaten Fort LeBoeuf last week, ultimately dropping a 22-7 decision. Jaxon Covell has rushed for 387 yards and four touchdowns and also has 250 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Ian McDonald, meanwhile, has thrown for 431 yards and four touchdowns.

REGION 5

CORRY (0-2) at HARBOR CREEK (1-2)

Corry is coming off a bye week, while Harbor Creek picked up its first win of the season, 42-0 over Conneaut last week. TyShawn Jones has been getting it done on the ground for the Huskies, rushing for 309 yards and five touchdowns, while Lance Brown has 206 yards and a score.

Nolan Carey has thrown for 219 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Mason Savitz has 72 yards and score on the ground.

FAIRVIEW (1-2) at FORT LEBOEUF (3-0)

LeBoeuf has given up just 35 points in its 3-0 start. Aiden Lesik was over 100 yards on the ground in last week’s 22-7 win over Titusville, while Conner McCheseny accounted for a pair of scores as well.

Fairview, meanwhile, is looking to bounce back from a loss to Meadville. Vinny Campoli has thrown for 382 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Jacob Harkness (149 yards, 1 touchdowns) is the top receiver.

GENERAL MCLANE (2-1) at NORTH EAST (2-1)

North East completely shut down Oil City in a 35-0 win last week. Quarterback Jackson Humes has been nearly perfect the last two weeks and on the season has completed 28-of-47 passes for 683 yards and nine touchdowns. Jamari Curlett has 173 yards rushing and two touchdowns and 372 yards receiving and six touchdowns. The ‘Pickers have given up just two points in the last two weeks after a season-opening 32-14 loss to Farrell.

GM is coming off a 34-14 win over Franklin last week. Jacob Zeitz had three interceptions on defense and also leads the team with 196 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Isaac Zetiz had thrown for 384 yards and six touchdowns.

REGION 6

MCDOWELL (1-2) at ERIE (2-1)

The Region 6 opener. McDowell is looking to bounce back from a 43-24 loss to North Allegheny. Quarterback Blayze Myers has thrown for four touchdowns in two of his first three games as the starter for the Trojans.

Erie, meanwhile, has allowed just 16 points through its first three games. Nyciere Smith (200 yards, 1 touchdown) and Tajahe Thomas (167 yards, 1 touchdown) lead the ground game.

NON-REGION

HOLLIDAYSBURG (1-1) at BUTLER (2-1)

Butler has back-to-back wins over Meadville and Brashear after a season-opening loss to Shaler. Landon Lacey has 122 yards rushing and three touchdowns and 108 yards receiving and a score for Butler, while Braylon Littlejohn has 269 yards on the ground.

Hollidaysburg is back after a week off following a 30-23 loss to Allegany (Maryland)

ST. FRANCIS (0-2) at CATHEDRAL PREP (1-1)

The Ramblers return to action after an unexpected week off. The ground game got going in a 47-36 Week 2 win over Canisius for Prep. Dajoure Hollingsworth has rushed for 392 yards and four touchdowns. Luke Costello, meanwhile, has thrown for 119 yards and two scores.

St. Francis has losses to Benedictine (44-29) and Chardon (35-20) out of Ohio to open the season. Terrence Pendergrass has 201 yards and three touchdowns rushing through two games.
