The ninth-grader was named to the MaxPreps High School Football All-America second team after a stellar rookie campaign for the Hornets, who advanced to the PIAA Class 3A semifinals.

His 10 interceptions ranked tops in the state among teams who enter their stats on MaxPreps and most among all freshman nationally.

He saved his best for last including a pick six in the 14-6 District 10 Class 3A title game win over Sharon and a three-interception performance in the PIAA quarterfinals against Central-Martinsburg.

He finished the season with 40 tackles, nine passes defended, and a fumble recovery.

There was a first and second team named, with Phillips one of five defensive backs named to the second team (there were four first team choices, including Larry Moon III of Pittsburgh Central Catholic).

Phillips was one of four players honored from Pennsylvania.

Quarterback Trent Seaborn of Thompson (Alabaster, Ala.), who already boasts multiple Power 5 offers, including from Alabama, was named National Freshman of the Year. Past winners of the award include Jabrill Peppers (2010), Nick Bosa (2012), Trevor Lawrence (2014) and Arch Manning (2019).
