Four District 10 Alums Earn All-PSAC West Football Honors as All-Conference Teams Named

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference released the 2023 PSAC Football All-Conference Teams and Major Award winners for the Western Division on Wednesday afternoon, with Slippery Rock University’s Brayden Long and head coach Shawn Lutz were named Offensive Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively, while Seton Hill’s Dioh Desuah (Defensive Athlete of the Year) and California’s Keith Charney (Freshman of the Year) were also honored.

The All-Conference Teams and Major Awards were selected by a vote of the conference’s head coaches.

District 10 alums earning first team honors on offense were Slippery Rock receiver Kyle Sheets (Conneaut), Slippery Rock guard Colton Rossi (Wilmington) and Gannon kicker Eric Scarpino (Fort LeBoeuf), while Clarion linebacker Griffin Buzzell (Meadville) was named second team on defense.

Slippery Rock quarterback Brayden Long wrapped up an impressive season that earned him Offensive Athlete of the Year honors. Long completed 242-of-354 passes (.684 completion percentage) for 3,061 yards and 33 touchdowns, all of which were PSAC-best marks and sixth-best in all of Division II. He threw just five interceptions on the season and tallied an efficiency rating of 168.9, the sixth-highest total in all of Division II.

For the second consecutive season, a Seton Hill Griffin claims the Defensive Athlete of the Year award, with defensive lineman Dioh Desuah earning the nod. For the season, he racked up 39 tackles (21 solo), five sacks, and four QB hurries to anchor the Griffin defense.

California redshirt freshman defensive back Keith Charney was named the Freshman of the Year after totaling 29 tackles (17 solo), six pass breakups, and four interceptions (including three against Seton Hill) to help the Vulcans’ defense rank third overall in total defense in the Western Division and first in the West against the run, surrendering just 116.7 yards per game.

The Coach of the Year in the West, Slippery Rock’s Shawn Lutz, guided The Rock to a 10-1 regular season record and gaudy offensive numbers: first in scoring at 42.5 points per game as well as 458.9 yards per game, also the best mark in the PSAC. The Rock was also best in the conference against the pass, surrendering just 150.8 yards through the air per game.

As for the All-Conference Teams, 17 student-athletes are making repeat appearances on the lists:
