Farrell, Mercyhurst Prep Roll Into D10 2A Championship Game; Cathedral Prep (5A), Meadville (4A) get Subregional Wins

HERMITAGE, Pa. – Kabron Smith threw for four touchdowns, two of which went to Juju Phillips, as No. 1 Farrell beat No. 4 Wilmington, 36-7 to advance to the District 10 Class 2A title game.

The Steelers scored just 1:28 into the game as Smith connected with Brandon Chambers on a 19-yard touchdown pass to make it 6-0.

Wilmington actually led in the game, 7-6, after Buddah Book hit Ben Miller for a 6-yard touchdown pass five seconds into the second quarter.

It was all Steelers after that, however, with Smith and Phillips hooking up twice for touchdowns over the final 2:17 of the half.

First, it was a 24-yard pass from Smith to Phillips with 2:17 to go in the second quarter, and then it was a 24-yard scoring strike 21 seconds before halftime. Both 2-point conversions were good as the Steelers took a 22-7 halftime lead.

            

It was special teams’ turn to make an impact in the third quarter, as Juelz Johnson returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown at the 7:40 mark of the third quarter.

Smith put the finishing touches on his night with a 44-yard scoring strike to Danny Odem with 8:13 to go in the game.

Smith finished 8-of-13 through the air for 170 yards, while Phillips had two receptions for 66 yards and Odem three for 70. Chambers also had an interception on defense.

Miller finished with 21 carries for 80 yards for Wilmington, while Tyler Mikulin had 20 carries for 85 yards.

The Steelers will seek their third straight District 10 title when they meet Mercyhurst Prep next Saturday at a site and time to be determined. The No. 2 Lakers beat No. 3 Sharpsville, 49-0

                          

MERCYHURST PREP 49, SHARPSVILLE 0

FAIRVIEW, Pa. – Paul Johnson ran for three touchdowns and threw another as Mercyhurst Prep rolled past Sharpsville, 49-0 in the District 10 Class 2A semifinals.

The Lakers have now outscored their opponents 586-36 on the season. Defensively, it was their fifth shutout of the season, and they have now scored at least 43 points in every game (their low was 43 in a season opening 43-14 win over Fairview).

Johnson’s scoring runs all covered at least 30 yards as the Lakers built a 35-0 halftime advantage.

Johnson scored on runs of 30 and 32 yards in the first half and had a 51-yarder in the third quarter.

Vinnie Feliciano also scored on a 1-yard run in the first half for the Lakers, and Johnson’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Clay Wotjecki made it 28-0 in the second quarter.

JJ Ganska scored on 1-yard touchdown run shortly before halftime, while Ja’son Ellman put the finishing touches on the game with a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Johnson also had a forced fumble on defense.

With the win, Mercyhurst Prep gets a showdown with Farrell for the Class 2A title.

CLASS 5A SUBREGIONAL

                        

CATHEDRAL PREP 63, HOLLIDAYSBURG 35

ALTOONA, Pa. – Suhtaun Lewis ran for 200 yards and five touchdowns as Cathedral Prep overcame a slow start to beat Hollidaysburg, 63-35 in a Class 5A subregional on Saturday.

Maddox Bainey threw a pair of touchdown passes for Hollidaysburg – one to Brady Steiner and the other to Jay Alabarano. Those touchdowns were sandwiched in between 43-yard touchdown run from Lewis, and Hollidaysburg was up 14-7 with 5:44 to go in the first quarter.

The Ramblers quickly stole the momentum, however.

Prep scored six touchdowns in the first half to take a 41-21 halftime lead.

The scoring runs covered 19 yards and 22 yards by Hollingsworth and 44 and 28 yards from Lewis, with Bainey throwing his second touchdown of the game to Steiner, this one covering 17 yards.

The passing game got in on the act in the second half as the Ramblers began to pour it on. Luke Costello threw a 15-yard touchdown to Corey Allen on Prep’s first drive of the second half to make it 48-21.

Lewis scored his fifth touchdown of the game, a 49-yard run, with 8:26 to go in the third quarter to make it 56-21 and put the running clock in effect.

Costello put the finishing touches on Prep’s superb offensive effort with aa 23-yard touchdown pass to RJ Roberts.

Bainey threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game and second to Albarano in the fourth quarter for Hollidaysburg .

         

Cathedral Prep now has a buy into the PIAA quarterfinals, where they await the winner of the WPIAL title game between Peters Township and Pine-Richland.

CLASS 4A SUBREGIONAL

MEADVILLE 22, UNIVERSITY PREP 18

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Jordan Lawrence’s 7-yard touchdown run with 5:15 to play and the subsequent 2-point conversion pushed Meadville to a 22-18 subregional win over University Prep.

Jacoby Thompson and Nic Wiliams both had interceptions in the final five minutes to seal the win for Meadville.

Meadville led 14-12 at halftime, but Xair Stevenson’s touchdown run on the opening drive of the second half gave University Prep a 18-14 lead.

Meadville tied the game, 6-6, with 2:48 left in the first quarter on a Brighton Anderson 3-yard touchdown run, and answered University Prep’s second touchdown of the game with one of their own to take the lead. This one came with 1:12 left in the half on Bradyn Miller’s 2-yard touchdown run, with the Bulldogs also converting the 2-point conversion.

With the win Meadville advances to play Juniata, a 36-22 winner over DuBois, at a site and time to be determined next week.
