College Roundup: Slippery Rock, Grove City, Allegheny Notch Season Opening Football Wins

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The 15th-ranked Slippery Rock University football team won its 14th straight season opener with a 28-17 victory over Wayne State University (Mich.) Saturday night at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The Rock overcame a slow start offensively to score 14 points late in the second quarter to take a 14-0 halftime lead and never trailed on the way to a fourth consecutive season-opening win over the Warriors.

DUQUESENE 49, EDINBORO 7

PITTSBURGH – The Edinboro football team dropped an 49-7 decision to host FCS Duquesne Saturday afternoon in the season opener at Rooney Field.

            

The Dukes got out early when Ayden Garnes jumped a Matt Carlisle pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown at the 14:11 mark of the first quarter. After the teams traded punts, Duquesne intercepted another Carlisle pass setting up a four-yard touchdown run by Darius Perrantes to make it 14-0.

GROVE CITY 17, WESTMINSTER 7

GROVE CITY, Pa. — Junior running back Nico Flati (Aliquippa, Pa./West Allegheny) ran for a game-high 114 yards while the Grove City defense held visiting Westminster to 11 first downs and 67 rushing yards Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines earned a 17-7 Presidents’ Athletic Conference win at Robert E. Thorn Field in the 2023 season opener.

ALLEGHENY 39, WAYNESBURG 36, OT

WAYNESBURG, Pa. — The Allegheny College football team survived a second-half scare to beat Waynesburg University in overtime, 39-36, in the 2023 season opener on the road at John F. Wiley Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Allegheny (1-0, 1-0 PAC) led by as many as 19 points in the first half, but needed to convert a third-and-15 play to secure the victory after limiting Waynesburg (0-1, 0-1 PAC) to a 42-yard field goal on the first possession of overtime.
