Chuzie Sets Girls’ Wins Mark at Prep/Villa; Slippery Rock, Franklin Notch Overtime Wins Jan. 30, 2023

FAIRVIEW, Pa. – Doug Chuzie notched career win No. 267, the most in Cathedral Prep/Villa Maria girls’ basketball history, in a 61-31 win over Fairview.

Lena Walz had a monster first quarter for the Ramblers, scoring 14 of her 21 points in the first eight minutes as the Ramblers built a 25-8 lead.

Jayden McBride finished with 18 points for Prep, while Addie Biel added 11.

Hope Garrity had 10 points to lead Fairview, while Sara Gennuso added seven.

SLIPPERY ROCK 60, HICKORY 58

                                      

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Julia Coffaro poured in 19 points as Slippery Rock edged Hickory in overtime, 60-58.

Slippery Rock built a 28-17 halftime lead before the Hornets came storming back to force overtime.

CJ Sabo had 15 points for Slippery Rock, while Madison Romanovich added nine.

Kaelyn Fustos had 18 points, while Madison Jones had 16 points and Mariah Swanson 11 for Hickory.

FRANKLIN 34, CORRY 30, overtime

                          

CORRY, Pa. – Estella Adams scored six of her eight points in overtime as Franklin earned a 34-30 win over Corry.

Katie Boal had 10 points and eight rebounds to lead Franklin, while Jenna Blum added five points.

Tayler Elchynski led Corry with nine points.

SHARPSVILLE 47, GREENVILLE 42

SHARPSVILLE, Pa. – Sharpsville went on a 14-4 run to open the game, handing Greenville its first Region 4 loss of the season, 47-42.

Chasie Fry poured in 20 points for Sharpsville, while Lily Palko had nine and Breanna Hanley seven.

Josie Lewis led Greenville with 14 points, while Grace Cano added 11.

HARBOR CREEK 57, GENERAL MCLANE 28

EDINBORO, Pa. – Brooke Przybylski scored 25 points as Harbor Creek earned a 57-28 win over General McLane.

Samantha Zank added 10 points for Harbor Creek, which outscored GM 25-10 in the second half.

                                   

Libby Opp led General McLane with 14 points, while Bella Dibble added eight.

WARREN 57, CONNEAUT 41

LINESVILLE, Pa. – Warren doubled up Conneaut in the third quarter to get some breathing room, then added another 17 points in the fourth on its way to a 57-41 Region 5 road win.

The Dragons led by seven at the end of the first quarter, but the Eagles trimmed the deficit to just two, 24-22, at halftime. Warren’s offense picked up the pace in the third, outscoring Conneaut, 16-8, to stretch the lead to 40-30.

Alana Stuart knocked down three 3-pointers on her way to a team-high 15 points. Halle Kuzminski had 14 points and Sammie Ruhlman added 13.

Lainie Harrington had a game-high 18 points to lead the Eagles, while Hannah Brody had 10 points.

NORTHWESTERN 56, EISENHOWER 36

RUSSELL, Pa. – A 22-0 run spanning the first and second quarters broke the game open as Northwestern cruised to a 56-36 Region 3 win at Eisenhower.

Trailing 3-2 with 4:06 to play in the first, Ashlyn Bucci put in a layup to start the run. Eisenhower ended the run on Lainey Font’s layup with 4:10 left in the second.

“We push the ball, setting up good offenses,” Northwestern’s Makayla Presser-Palmer said. “We have good defenses with our presses and our zones getting teams off-guard.”

Presser-Palmer, one of District 10’s top scorers coming into the game, was as advertised as she scored a game-high 22 points. Chloe Yazembiak had 10 points and Rylee Schwartz added nine in the win.

Clara Steinberg led the Knights with 14 points. Font finished with seven points.

GROVE CITY 56, SHARON 42

                                  

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Piper Como poured in 23 points as Grove City earned a 52-42 win over Sharon.

Delaney Callahan also had a big game for Grove City with 20 points, as the Eagles built a 27-16 halftime lead.

Indian McGee had 19 points for Sharon.

SAEGERTOWN 61, YOUNGSVILLE 14

SAEGERTOWN, Pa. – Lindsey Greco scored 21 points, including nine in the first quarter as Saegertown powered past Youngsville, 61-14.

Hailee Gregor and Maggie Triola were also in double figures for Saegertown with 10 points each.

Zaylee Cressley led Youngsville with 10 points.

KENNEDY CATHOLIC 87, FARRELL 29

FARRELL, Pa. – Freshman Bella Magestro poured in 25 points as Kennedy Catholic beat Farrell, 87-29.

Layke Fields also had a big game for KC with 21 points, while Cassie Dancak added 12 and Monique Vincent 10.

Damerra Thomas paced Farrell with 11 points.

MERCER 31, LAKEVIEW 29

STONEBORO, Pa. – Mercer outscored Lakeview 10-4 in the fourth quarter to earn a 31-29 win over Lakeview.

Ava Godfrey had nine points to lead Mercer.

Emma Marsteller had 14 points to lead Lakeview.

OIL CITY 38, MEADVILLE 35

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Payton Liederbach scored 12 points as Oil City earned a 38-35 win over Meadville.

Emma Stahl added eight points for Oil City, while Maddy Marczak and Nicki Petro added six apiece.

Alex Gallagher had 10 points and Aliviah Ashton had nine for Meadville.

COCHRANTON 48, ROCKY GROVE 9

COCHRANTON, Pa. – Ella Gallo, Abby Knapka, Zoe Hansen, and Hannah Lyons scored eight points apiece as Cochranton beat Rocky Grove, 48-9.

REYNOLDS 40, JAMESTOWN 19

JAMESTOWN, Pa. – Ava Murcko scored 16 points as Reynolds earned a 40-19 win over Jamestown.

Lea Miller was also in double figures for Reynolds with 11 points, while Julie Wade added seven.

Reynolds went on a 12-2 run to open the game en route to the win.

Alayna Cadman led Jamestown with 11 points.

WEST MIDDLESEX 56, COMMODORE PERRY 16

HADLEY, Pa. – Caitlin Stephens had 21 points and 15 rebounds as West Middlesex beat Commodore Perry, 56-16.

Emma Mild added 13 points for the Big Reds, while Alexis Babcock had nine.

Sophia Matalino had four points for Commodore Perry.

MCDOWELL 50, ERIE 40

ERIE, Pa. – Jessica Hetz scored 14 points as McDowell earned a 50-40 win over McDowell.

Caylen Spano was also in double figures for McDowell with 11 points, while Amaiyah Nelson added seven.

Drea Neavins led Erie with 14 points.

MERCYHURST PREP 47, SENECA 23

WATTSBURG, Pa. – Olivia Kulyk scored 13 points as Mercyhurst Prep topped Seneca, 47-23.

Mia Mangini added eight points in the win for the Lakers.

Lauren Konkol had seven points for Seneca.

NORTH EAST 65, IROQUOIS 21

ERIE, Pa. – Maisey Post led a balanced North East effort with 12 points in a 65-21 win over North East.

Gigi Gaston added 12 points for North East.
