Breaking News: Clarion to Name Renovated Football Field Behind High School After Larry Wiser

CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion Area School Board Tuesday night announced that the renovated football field behind Clarion High School will be named long-time head coach Larry Wiser.

Wiser, a football color commentator for the YDL Sports Network, retired from coaching following the 2020 season.

In 32 years as the head football coach of either the Clarion Bobcats (1988-2009, 2011-2019) or the Central Clarion County Wildcats (2020), the co-op program formed between Clarion, Clarion-Limestone, and North Clarion, Wiser went 237-103-1 (70.1%). He is the second-winningest coach in District 9 history and guided Clarion to four District 9 titles, (three in 1A – 1997, 2009, 2013 – and one in 2A – 2017) and eight runner-up finishes.

The field, which will see the return of varsity football action for the first time since the 2003 season with the return of games hosted by Clarion to the facility, will be officially named Wiser Field during a ceremony during the Sept. 1 Central Clarion game against Port Allegany, which will be broadcast on the YDL Sports Network.

Larry’s son, Ryan, made the announcement at Tuesday’s meeting.
