District 9 Committee Elects New Treasurer, Secretary; Hears from Group Concerned about Transgender Issues at June Meeting

RIDGWAY, Pa. – At its June 5 committee meeting at Fox’s Pizza in Ridgway, the District 9 Committee elected a new treasurer and secretary and heard from a group concerned about transgender athletes.

Anita Orton will be the treasurer while Josh Williams will occupy the newly created position of assistant treasurer.

Bonnie Wolbert is the new secretary.

A treasurer and secretary needed to be elected following the death of long-time treasurer and secretary Bob Tonkin in May.

In addition, Orton and Kevin Doverspike were reelected as Female and Male Parents Representatives to the Committee. They were elected to two-year terms.

Orton has been the Female Parents Representative since 2021.

Doverspike, who also serves as the assistant chairman of the Committee, has been a member of the committee since 2009.

TRANSGENDER DISCUSSION HELD

Jami Mathis addressed the committee on behalf of a group of parents of female athletes concerning transgender athletic participation at the PIAA level.

A general discussion was held with Mathis by the committee regarding the group’s concern over transgender participation in high school sports.

No action was taken as the District 9 committee must follow PIAA policy on the topic.

JR. HIGH CROSS COUNTRY CO-OP SPORTS AGREEMENT APPROVED FOR CLARION-LIMESTONE, CLARION

The committee approved a junior high boys’ and girls’ cross country co-op between Clarion-Limestone and Clarion beginning with the 2024-25 school year.

C-L will be the host of the co-op.

TONKIN FAMILY WISHES TO INSTITUTE ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP

The family of the late Bob Tonkin has told the committee it would like to institute an annual scholarship to be
awarded to a deserving D9 athlete. Additional information will be forthcoming.
