Ten D9/10 Teams in Action Tuesday Seeking Berths In PIAA Quarterfinals

A total of nine District 9 and District 10 boys basketball teams are in action Tuesday, with berths in the PIAA quarterfinals on the line. 

In boys’ action, Elk County Catholic, Farrell, Cameron County, and Union are in action in 1A, as is Cathedral Prep in 5A.

On the girls’ side, Kennedy Catholic, Redbank Valley, Maplewood, and Lakeview take the court in, as does Mercyhurst Prep in 3A.

Here’s a look at Tuesday’s games.

CLASS 1A BOYS

                                      

(9-2) Union (15-12) vs. (7-1) Imani Christian (19-6) at Kiski H.S. 7:30 p.m.

How they got here: Union beat Turkeyfoot Valley 64-28 in the first round. Imani Christian beat Clarion 78-43 in the first round.

Johnston scored 22 points and Laughlin 20 to lead the Knights … Union lost both regular season series against Clarion, who Imani Christian beat in the first round, but beat the Bobcats in the D9 quarterfinals, 58-48 … Imani outscored Clarion 30-5 in the second quarter to pull away … Wesley and Givner had 16 points each in the win, and Hall 14.

(6-2) Harmony (23-3) vs. (10-1) Farrell (21-4) at PennWest Clarion, 7:30 p.m.

How they got here: Harmony beat DuBois Central Catholic, 70-58. Farrell beat Geibel Catholic, 75-62

Notes: Cameron County pulled off perhaps the biggest first-round surprise in 1A, dominating District 6 champion Portage. It was the Red Raiders’ first PIAA playoff win since 2015, a team led by Nate Sestina, who is currently playing professionally in Turkey … Smith had 15 points and Allison 14 in the first-round win … Union had little trouble in a 65-45 win over a Kennedy Catholic team that advanced to the PIAA semifinals a year ago … Union got 28 points from Matt Stanley and 12 from Lucas Stanley in the win over KC … Union is a combined 54-4 the last two seasons.

(7-3) Carlynton (18-7) vs. (9-1) Elk County Catholic (26-2), 6 p.m. at PennWest Clarion

How they got here: Carlynton beat D5 runner-up Southern Fulton, 63-35. Elk County Catholic beat WPIAL No. 5 Neighborhood Academy, 67-47.

Notes: ECC won its 49th PIAA playoff game in program history with the victory over Neighborhood Academy. Jacobs. Adam Straub and Wortman had 14 points each in the first-round win … Wasko has returned from a knee injury suffered in early February against Brookville … In Carlynton’s win over Southern Fulton, senior Austin Milliner scored a season-high 25 points, while Jones had 13 and Schriver 10 … Carlynton has scored 60 points or more in 14 of its 18 wins, while Elk County Catholic has not allowed more than 47 points in a game this season.

CLASS 5A

(10-1) Cathedral Prep vs. (7-6) Mars (17-10) at Westminster College, 6 p.m.

How they got here: Cathedral Prep beat (7-5) South Fayette 47-45. Mars beat (3-2) Manheim Central 61-49.
Who the winner gets: (7-2) Peters Township/(3-7) Lampeter Strasburg winner in quarterfinals on Friday, March 17.

Notes: After winning all but two of their games by double-digits during the regular season, the Ramblers have executed in some tight games in the playoffs. They trailed by as many as eight before beating DuBois in subregional play, and held off South Fayette thanks to some timely defense in the first-round PIAA win … Lofton had 15 points and Sambuchino 14 in the win over South Fayette … The two teams have a common opponent in Meadville, whom the Ramblers beat three times, including in the D10 title game. Mars beat the Bulldogs 85-57 back on Dec. 3 … Black had 21 points and Ceh 16 points and 16 rebounds in the win over Manheim Central.

CLASS 2A

CLASS 3A

How they got here: Shady Side Academy beat (9-1) Karns City 54-19 in the first round. Mercyhurst Prep beat (7-7) Waynesburg Central, 73-35.
