PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – Punxsutawney, the No. 4 seed in the District 9 Class 2A girls team tennis tournament, knocked off No. 5 seed Elk County Catholic 4-1 on Thursday.
The Chucks swept all three singles matches, as Chloe Presloid won by forfeit, Emily McMahan beat Lydia Anderson 6-3, 6-0 and Brooke Skarbeck topped Gina Bush in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.
In doubles, Punxsy’s Hannah Pearce and Chloe Aul were a 7-5, 7-5 winner over Rachael Wolfe and Megan Emmert
ECC picked up its win at No. 2 singles as Josie VanAlstine and Melinda Gradi beat Hailey Smith and Alexia Matt 1-6, 6-1, 7-5.
With the win, the Chucks advance to play top seed St. Marys on Oct. 13. Brockway and Clearfield will meet in the other semifinal, also on Oct. 13.
VILLA MARIA 3, MCDOWELL 2
ERIE, Pa. – Villa improved to 17-0 with a hard-fought 3-2 win over McDowell.
The Victors got wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, as Anna Poranski earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nabiah Bhatti and Annie Prichard topped Marla Minchelli, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, McDowell’s Emma Heinlein beat Sophia Glance, 6-3, 7-6.
At No. 1 doubles, Villa’s Abby Consiglio and Margaret Prichard beat Lina Warrior and Abby Idzik, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, McDowell’s Tia Jain and Rosa Simon bested Lilli Beuchart and Sofia Falvo, 6-1, 6-4.
