Six D9/10 Wrestlers Claim Second-Place Finishes at PIAA Wrestling Championships

HERSHEY, Pa. – Led by six silver medalists, District 9 and District 10 wrestlers earned a combined 28 top-eight finishes at the PIAA wrestling championships, including 23 in Class 2A.

In Class 2A, Hickory’s Louie Gill (106), Brockway’s Mark Palmer (126), Brookville’s Owen Reinsel (132), Harbor Creek’s Connor Pierce (138), and Greenville’s Cole Karpinski (189) all wrestled for goad, as did Cathedral Prep’s Kaemen Smith in Class 3A at 152.

Gill, a sophomore seeking back-to-back state titles, fell in the championship bout to Aaron Seidel of Northern Lebanon, 5-1.

Palmer, meanwhile, dropped a 9-2 decision to Scott Johnson (Muncy), Reinsel a 1-0 decision to Brandan Chletsos (Notre Dame-Green Pond), and Karpinski a 5-1 decision to Isaac Cory (Montoursville).

                              

Smith, meanwhile, advanced to the finals with a 4-2 semifinal win over Kelin Laffey (Pine-Richland) in the semifinals Saturday morning before dropping a 3-2 decision to Dylan Evans (Chartiers Valley) in the championship.

Saegertown had four medalists -Hunter Robison (7th, 113, a repeat medalist), Carter Beck (6th, 113), Landon Caldwell (5th, 189), and Josh Perrine (6th, 285), while Hickory – Gill, Connor Saylor (5th, 138) and Carter Gill (4th, 145) and Brookville – Reinsel, Cole Householder (7th, 120, first Brookville freshman to finish in top eight) and Bryce Rafferty (6th, 215) had three each and Brockway – Palmer and Seth Stewart (6th, 189) and Corry – Hayden Linkerhof (5th, 215) and Xavier Reyda (7th, 285) two apiece.

The 215-pound weight class saw all four Northwest Region qualifiers reach the medal stand as Linkerhoff and Rafferty were joined by Girard’s Abe Keep (4th) and Eisenhower’s Cael Black (7th).

Hickory finished tied for seventh in the Class 2A team standings with 49.5 points, while Brookville was ninth with 45.5, Saegertown tied for tenth with 44, and Brockway 19th with 36.5. Notre Dame-Green Pond was first with 116, followed by Saucon Valley (99).

                          

In Class 3A, Prep senior Jake VanDee, seeking a second consecutive state title, fell in the semifinals to Ethan Lebin of Hempfield, 3-2, and finished fifth at 126.

The Ramblers were joined by Clearfield with multiple Class 3A medalists as Oliver Billotte finished fourth at 285 and Carter Chamberlain eighth at 189, a weight class in which Meadville’s Griffin Buzzell finised fifth.
