ERIE – Dueces were wild in the District 10 Class 1A championship as Cambridge Springs scored all six of its runs with two outs in a 6-2 win over Saegertown.
The Blue Devils got one run in the third and five in the fifth. The win gave Cambridge Springs its 9th D10 softball title, and gave the Blue Devils a clean sweep in girls’ sports this season as girls’ soccer, girls’ basketball and softball all won D10 titles.
“As a team, coming together and putting everything together was just awesome,” pitcher Hailee Rodgers said.

With two gone in the fifth, Maddie Dragosavac hit a single up the middle. Paige Verbanac and Kylee Miller walked to load the bases. Aly Reyes reached on an error and Dragosavac came in on the play. Taylor Smith walked to bring in another run and Chloe Schultz launched a ball to left center for a bases clearing triple and a 6-0 Cambridge Springs lead.
“We never give up,” Cambridge Springs coach Angela Mumford said. “We will never give up as long as we still have a strike, we’re in the game. That’s what we believe.”
“We’ve always concentrated on winning every inning, and it’s not done until the last out and that inning was huge for us,” Rodgers added.
That “never give up” attitude was on full display for the final out of the game. A shallow pop-up hit off the edge of Rodgers’ glove and rolled into foul territory. Makenzie Lewis came from her catcher’s spot behind the plate and grabbed the loose ball. She threw to Myranda Findlay who put a tag on the runner (after making a turn towards second) for the out and the celebration was on.
“After it hit my glove, I saw Makenzie was right there and she knew enough to throw it to first and Myranda was ready and just getting that out was huge,” Rodgers said.
With one out and a runner on in the sixth, Brittany Houck pummeled a ball over the left field fence to cut the deficit to 6-2.
“Houck’s a great player, she’s strong, she’s tough,” Mumford said.

Cambridge struck first in the third. Verbanac beat out an infield single and Miller took the first pitch she saw deep to the gap in left-center for an RBI double and a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Devils will take on District 9 runner-up, Clarion-Limestone, in the first round of the PIAA state tournament Monday, June 7.
