PSU-DuBois Knocks Off Top-Seeded Miami-Hamilton in Small College World Series Tuesday Morning

DUBOIS, Pa. – Using a three-run fifth inning, Penn State-DuBois knocked off top-seeded Miami-Hamilton in the winner’s bracket of the 2023 USCAA Small College World Series at DuBois’s Showers Field.

Down 3-2 going to the fifth inning of the seven-inning game, the Lions rallied with two outs.

Cory Lehman started the outburst with a single and Brandon Sicheri followed with a single that moved Lehman to second. Kyle Elensky then worked a walk to load the bases, and Tyler Herzing, pinch hitting, was a hit by a pitch to tie the game.

Another pinch hitter, Logan Wagner, followed with a two-run single to give Penn State-DuBois the lead.

The Harriers got a run back in the sixth, but Taylor Boland shut the door in the seventh to pick up the win.

Boland went seven innings allowing four earned runs on six hits, a hit batter, and a walk while striking out three. He gave up three home runs.

Grant Lillard was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI to lead the Lions’ offense.

Bradley Vargas was 2-for-3 with a home run, a run scored, and two RBIs for Miami-Hamilton, last year’s runner-up.

Chris Hoffman and Dalton Miller also hit home runs for the Harriers with Miller going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Dylan Beal took the loss going 4 2/3 innings allowing five earned runs on seven hits, four walks, and a hit batter. He struck out five.

Both teams are still alive in the double-elimination tournament.

Ninth-seeded Penn State-DuBois will face fourth-seeded Penn State-Mt. Alto in the winner’s bracket semifinals at approximately 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, while Miami-Hamilton takes on the winner of the Bryant & Stratton Albany vs. D’Youville game at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 17.
