Prep Swimmers Take PIAA Class 2A Team Title; D9/10 Finishes Strong

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Cathedral Prep swimming and diving team captured the team championship at the PIAA Class 2A championships at Bucknell University on Saturday.

The Ramblers wrapped up a stellar performance with a total of 196 points, outdistancing second-place Riverside, which finished with 148 points.

The Ramblers had a number of place winners once again on Saturday, with Mitchell Bradford capturing two more medals, including a second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.11. Riverside’s Jo Roth won with a state record time of 48.44 Bradford’s teammate, Aidan Levis, took seventh in the event with a time of 52.83.

Bradford and Levis then teamed with Charles Agresti and Kyle Sargent to take fourth in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:13.76. Riverside won the event with a time of 3:09.95.

Clearfield’s Leif Hoffman wrapped up his big weekend with a fourth-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:41.51, with Titusville’s Conan Young finishing in a tie for seventh in the event with a time of 4:47.46. Matthew Purcell of Northgate (4:35.14) won the event.

Sharon’s Mark Cattron earned another state medal as well, taking eighth in the 100 free, clocking in at 47.87, an event won by Preston Kessler of Indiana (44.96).

On the girls’ side, Villa Maria’s bid for another team title came up just short, as they finished with 133.50 team points, good for third. Schuykill Valley won with a score of 177.

District 10 picked up a pair of third-place finishes, as Warren’s Katie Beyer (100 free) and Katie Madigan (diving), as well as Villa’s Megan Maholic (100 back), took bronze.

Beyer took third in the 100 free with a time of 51.49, with Lily King of Mt. Pleasant (49.78) taking first.

In the 100 backstroke, Maholic clocked in at 53.99, with Bedford’s Leah Shackley winning with a state record mark of 52.42. Villa’s Maria Costa (59.65) was eighth.

Madigan, meanwhile, earned her second consecutive PIAA medal in diving with a total score of 393.65. Alexandra Pastris of Marple Newtown won with a total score of 431.65. Harbor Creek’s Regan Rand was eighth at 346.45.
