PIAA Votes to Reduce Wrestling Weight Classes

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – High school wrestling will have a different look in Pennsylvania next season.

On Wednesday, the PIAA Board of Directors voted to reduce the number of weight classes from 14 to 13. The vote passed on a third and final reading by unanimous vote.

The 13 weight classes are as follows: 106 ,113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 172, 189, 215 and 285.

The changes are in the upper weights, where the old weight classes were 180, 195, 220 and 285.

This directly impacts a pair of high profile wrestlers from Warren County. Sheffield rising senior Ethan Finch and Eisenhower rising junior Cael Black were both state medalists in 2020, Finch at 182 and Black at 220. A return trip to the medal stand in 2021 is now assured of being in a different weight class.

PIAA executive director Dr. Robert Lombardi said one reason for the change was the number of matches that had bouts forfeited, noting that 93 percent of matches had at least one forfeit.
